Hello everyone,

Our library has graciously authorized the purchase of 2 PS3's and 2
Wii's for use in a teen and childrens gaming area (1 of each at each
station). I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for how to
house or store the consoles and equipment. I would like to keep the
consoles and games in a portable storage cabinet. The idea is to keep
it hooked up to the TV with the cords in a hole though the back of the
unit, but to be able to move the systems to our meeting room for
bigger programs. Ventilation or a cooling unit is a plus, however not
needed as our facilities crew has offered to install something if we
need to. The same goes for a lock on the doors. If our facilities
will be doing modifications, I dont want to spend a ton of money, and
the cabinet will also have to be wooden for them to work on.

I've looked on both library furnishing sites and places like Ikea and
Target and the best I can come up with is a kitchen microwave cart.
I'm curious to see what other libraries are using to house theirs
systems.

Thank you,

Hello Bryan,

After visiting a library to see how they implemented their game program, I knew exactly what I wanted - an industrial mobile cart that was lockable & made of steel. I don't remember who we bought ours from, maybe Grainger, but it's a Sandusky cabinet like these here.  Ours is a 36-inch model, which gives you enough length for guitars, drum kits and stands without having to break them down each time you put them away. Plus, it's lockable and is easy to roll. It contains all the stuff for our Wii and our XBox 360 - controllers, games, dance pad, extra batteries, everything! It sounds like your program will be bigger than ours, so you may want to look into more of a chest-type cabinet that musicians would use. Ours is sturdy enough that I have a 32" LCD HDTV bolted to the top. The Wii usually is hooked up to this one, and our XBox to the 46" in the permanent cabinet. The beauty is that I have all our equipment in one container and setup and take down are quick.

I knew before I started looking that it wouldn't be cheap, and would likely have to come from an industrial supply house. Ours cost around $700 if I remember correctly, but it is exactly what we needed. The director nearly vapor locked at the price, but the security & construction is what sold it. I'd advise you not to skimp in this category, for the protection of your expensive equipment (console thefts up 285% this year!) and peace of mind.

Hope I've helped, and good luck!

Jim,

That sounds like almost exactly what I need to look for.  Do you just run the cables out of the front of the cabinet, or is there a slot for them in the back?  I'm glad you mentioned needing the high security, its something I had thought of, but hadn't put quite so high on my priority list.  I will be sure to move it up now.  Also, have you come across any overheating issues with a metal cabinet and no ventilation, or do you simply leave the doors open during use?

Thank you for the quick response, I have already forwarded your email to our facilities department to take a look at.
