Trying to get my technology in order for a nationwide lock-in on August 3rd. Online Wii Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros Brawl is on the menu.

Here's my problem. I don't have any problem connecting, creating a game room, and playing with my nephew 20 minutes away. When I try to do the same with libraries in Illinois, Calif, and Alaska I or my potential gamers get disconnected with the following error code: 86420. I've researched the error code. Can anyone explain to me what's happening and why? I'm pretty sure the problem is on my end, because my collegues in the other states can join/play when I'm not in the mix.

Any advice would be appreciated!

hi dawn, 86420 errors are firewall problems, and it usually comes up when there are two firewalls in the equation, which is probably why you can play your nephew. You'll need some help from whoever configures your network to resolve this. basically, the wii needs to have all TCP and UDP ports open to the Internet. This is usually done by putting the wii completely outside the firewall or in an open DMZ. (network geeks should know what all this means.) One thing that sometimes comes up here is that your network may not allow this special configuration for devices on wifi, which is why libraries that run into this error often wind up buying a Wii USB-Ethernet adapter (about $25) so that the wii can use wired internet, which can be easier to put outside the firewall.   Hope that helps, sounds like an awesome event!
