Status update October 2018

Dear all,

in the last month we fixed a number of issues that we wanted to address
before the 0.1 release. Furthermore, Alex was working on the
infrastructure to manage versions and releases throughout the project.

Ian, we have your input about acknowledgments on the list for the 0.1
release as well!

Last week Alex and I were in Hamburg visiting DESY and X-Spectrum. as an
outcome, we are preparing an ATTRACT proposal to fund the development of
live acquisition and processing together with Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin,
X-Spectrum in Hamburg and Quantum Detectors.

With DESY we've been preparing for a conference for new and interesting
projects about data processing and information within the Helmholtz
society next week. If you have ideas or interest in this direction that
intersect with LiberTEM, we'd be very happy to discuss! :-)

Furthermore we are looking into cloud deployments of LiberTEM. The high
IO throughput requirements certainly make it interesting, both on cloud
infrastructure and LiberTEM side. Our current thinking is to distinguish
three operation modes: Local single node, Hadoop FS cluster, and cloud
deployment with local caching. Your input and ideas how to solve this in
an elegant and efficient way are very much appreciated!

The ESTEEM3 project that, among other things, funds advanced method and
infrastructure developments for TEM, will start next year. Some of the
ESTEEM3 tasks fit nicely in the overall LiberTEM picture. We should
discuss how we want to proceed there. :-)
