Equality Now has just issued an urgent alert calling on the Government of Iran to commute Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani's death sentence and to release her from prision immediately and unconditionally. Equality Now is deeply concerned about reports that Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani, who was sentenced to death by stoning for adultery, may now also be sentenced to hanging for the murder of her husband, despite having previously been acquitted of both crimes and lashed for "illicit relations." Please call on Iranian officials to immediately release Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani, commute all sentences of death by stoning and prohibit by law all cruel, inhuman and degrading punishments such as flogging and stoning in accordance with Iran's obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and Iran's own constitutional provision for equality before the law.
