Equality Now has just issued an urgent alert calling on the Government of The Gambia to release immediately on bail women's rights advocates, Dr. Isatou Touray, the Executive Director of The Gambia Committee Against Traditional Practices (GAMCOTRAP), and her colleague Amie Bojang-Sissoho. Equality Now is deeply concerned about the arrests of these prominent activists who have been working for decades to end female genital mutilation (FGM) in The Gambia. They were taken under police custody on October 11,2010 and later moved to Mile Two Central Prison where they are detained without bail in violation of international law and of the Gambian constitution.
