A horrifying surveillance video shows a woman literally on fire as she
runs into a store for help, desperate to douse the flames and save
herself. A horrified witness called 911, exclaiming "she's on fire!"
One year later, the victim, 32-year-old Yvette Cade, is so badly
burned she must wear a mask and body suit to protect her torched
skin.
But this was no accident. Yvette was deliberately set aflame by
her husband, Roger Hargrove.
It happened at a Maryland cell phone store where Yvette worked as a
saleswoman. She was legally separated from her husband when he
unexpectedly entered the store, and the horrifying attack began.
In front of customers, Hargrove poured a soda bottle full of gasoline
over his wife. Then he chased her out the store and threw a match at
her, setting her ablaze instantly.
In the 911 call, witnesses were heard yelling for Yvette to roll on
the ground to extinguish the fire.
Even 18 surgeries have not completely repaired the third degree burns
all over her body. "I thought my face melted off. My nose is gone and
my ears are gone," Yvette told INSIDE EDITION.
Yvette said her husband told her he loved her while he doused her with
the gas.
Yvette feared her husband would come after her and begged a Maryland
judge to continue an existing order of protection. When Yvette made
it clear in court that she wanted a divorce, the judge said, "I want
to be 6 foot 5 but that's not what we do here," and then dismissed the
case.
The order of protection was lifted, and just three weeks later the
savage attack that left her disfigured took place.
Everyday Yvette endures wearing the mask and pressure suit for 23
hours a day, only taking it off to bathe and eat. They are designed to
flatten the graphs and make her skin smooth.
But Yvette is not hiding behinds her wounds. During her interview
with INSIDE EDITION, she wore a sleeveless top around Manhattan. She
says she wants people to know the horrors of domestic violence.
Yvette's ex-husband has been sentenced to life in prison for first-
degree attempted murder. Yvette feels safe knowing that he will never
be able to hurt her again.
