Number of Factor in a tree shape graph

Hi ,

I am using LibDAI for solving exact inference in a tree shape graph.

Since my graph is a tree there are maximum factor of length two between node and I create factor graph to support double factors .
But my question is that , is it necessary to define factors with 1 node or for tree shape graph I should only define double factors ?
