Libarchive 2.6.1 is now available for download from
http://libarchive.googlecode.com/ This is the best
version of libarchive; I know of no reason for anyone
to be using an earlier version.

Libarchive 2.6.1 is a maintenance release that fixes a few
bugs found after libarchive 2.6.0 was shipped:
* Multiple -s options in bsdtar
* gzip-compressed archives would occasionally report a fatal error
* Several minor build failures
Many thanks to the people who reported these problems.

Libarchive 2.7 is being actively developed and I hope to ship
it in a few months. The Wiki on Googlecode has draft release
notes that outline the features we're working on for that release.
In particular, Michihiro NAKAJIMA has been working hard to
improve the Windows support and Christian Ehrlicher has
contributed a cmake-based build system that should make
libarchive buildable in many more environments. (Don't
worry; the autoconf-based build system for POSIX environments
will continue to be supported!) Please check out libarchive/trunk
source code from the Googlecode repository and let me know
what you think. In particular, I'm always interested to hear
about build or test failures on any platform. I'm also looking
for people to help maintain Solaris and Mac OS ports.

Cheers,

Tim Kientzle
