Garmin offers a wide variety of mapping products. Selecting the correct map depends on the type of activity being done, and what features are needed for the map to support. While this article contains a great deal of information, it is best to be fully informed before making a purchase to avoid issues later.
You can browse available maps by going to Garmin Wearables Mapping. You can also find compatible maps for your watch by searching through the watch product page on garmin.com; see full steps in the Checking Compatibility drop down below. Many map types have different coverage regions available. The areas a map covers are shown and listed in the Coverage tab on the map product page.
Different regions of the world may have different maps available; if your desired coverage is not available in your area, you can try changing which Garmin storefront you are shopping. To change to a different country's storefront, click the country listed in the bottom left of the website and then select your desired region. Shopping from a different country site can result in international charges.
Some watches also come with access to worldwide topo map coverage. To see if you already have access to other maps with your watch, check our FAQ on Managing Maps on Garmin Devices With Garmin Express for compatibility and steps for adding mapping to your watch.
Do not manually delete files from the Garmin folder of the watch in order to make more space. This can cause loss of the current mapping, or the watch may become inoperable. If you have added audio files to a music storage capable watch, you can remove music files using Garmin Express if you need more space, see Managing Audio Content on My Watch Using Garmin Express.
We recommend using the same email for the order as the one you used for your Garmin account. A confirmation screen will display when the order is complete, and an email confirmation will be received shortly thereafter. Downloadable maps are not able to be returned for a refund.
Garmin watches need the appropriate amount of space to download a map to the watch. Do not delete files from the watch as this could cause loss of the current mapping, or the watch may become inoperable.
When a map is purchased from the Garmin website, the confirmation page will display the option to launch Garmin Express software to install the map. If this step was not completed and the confirmation screen has been closed or the map needs to be reinstalled to an associated watch, the map can be installed with Garmin Express without launching it from the website.
I was misled. I spend $650 bc I loved the idea of having GPS and maps. The free maps are crap right? I synced and downloaded everything several times. I thought the maps would come with street maps and trail maps. I open the map on my watch and all I can see is the nearby highway? For $700?!! That's ALL I get?! What the hell.
I can download trail maps from ALLTRAILS after joining the app pro version. So every time I go on a hike I have to ahead of time download the trail from ALLTRAILS on my computer? I wanted this watch to have street maps and trail maps with more detail and accuracy than the free stuff like Google maps or MapmyRide.
MapmyRide app is FREE and a 100x better than what I wanted the most of out of this damn watch which was detailed maps that I thought were already downloaded. I went to hike for 2 hours on a popular trail and I didn't have *** in the way of assistance from this watch, I came to find out on the trail.
The free maps work great. Sounds like you've bought a watch from one region and tried to use it in another where it only has the base map which is, yes, basic. I bought my watch in New Zealand, it comes with New Zealand maps and they're good. If I want super detailed maps of some area though you still need to download them. How much detail of the world did you expect was going to fit into 32gb of storage?
I was misled. I spend $650 because I loved the idea of a supportive and helpful forum to assist me in getting the most out of my watch. Instead I open my browser and all I get is uninformed people who haven't RTFM but sure do have the OUTRAGE TURNED UP TO 11.
Finally, if you did buy an out-of-region watch, take a look at DCRainmaker's guide on loading free maps. www.dcrainmaker.com/.../how-to-installing-free-maps-on-your-garmin-fenix-5-plus-forerunner-945-or-marq-series-watch.html
Free maps are no crap. There ar a lot of free osm maps, which are great. And these maps are often updated (if you always want current maps)- the Garmin TopoActive maps are (only) updated 2 or 3 times a year.
1) change your data screens for activities where you want to see maps and add a map screen - you can now during the activity scroll to the map screen and see your position. By zooming in and panning around your can see what is around you, and make decisions on which route to take.
2) download a premade course/.route and when starting the activity launch that route and it will show you the route on the map and provide TBT instructions. You can use the built in connect app, Garmin Explorer (note you can have this live running on your phone while using your watch, or not - useful for creating routes, syncing routes, pulling/pushing waypoints to watch), Komoot (can create/share sync routes directly to connect app/watch), Strava etc - loads of options.
5) Track me activity - like using this when tracking non activity activities (i.e. take a boat ride / wildlife park ride etc i.e. not being active, but gives me a way of tracking where we went, then I say the waypoints for POI (i.e.spotted grey seal here, dolphins at this point), so I can then match up the pictures to POI waypoints - makes for a real nice storybook of the trip.
I really do think that once you actually take the time to read and understand a little bit more about what you watch actually can do/provides you will perhaps not be so disappointed anymore. This might be a useful hiking review that highlights most of the navigation features: -gear/garmin-fenix-6x-pro-solar-in-depth-review/
PS - re the map detail - I suspect you need to change to high level, and or you have different region, as where I am there is load of detail. And even when hiking in my local area which I thought I knew well, I have been very surprised at the amount of "right of way" paths the watch has identified and suggest as routes which I didn't know existed. So yes the detail is there. It also has no difficulty in regards to showing streets and performing navigation around them; and the "whats around me" feature is pretty accurate and up to date in my local areas and covers around 90% of what is there.
That sounds like the only map you have active is the basemap.
BTW some of the free downloadable OSM maps are unbelievably good. I have one for the UK with virtually every public right of way on it.
Not the best photo, but showing a) Basecamp satellite imagery and a route with TBT directions. Garmin Connect can create routes, but I prefer PlotARoute. But you can use things like Komoot and the like to create a GPX route and send it to the watch. I've done a whole bunch of ultra's all guided by maps and routes.
Hi, I have a strange issue. All updates seem to have worked and the map Coverage updates all installed without issue. Only the TopoActive Europe 2019.10 won't install always giving error installing update. I have tried Garmin Express on Mac (main computer) and Windows even reinstalled Garmin express and reset fenix 6 to factory defaults. Nothing seem to work to install the updated map. See picture
Just a hunch, I had the same issue on my edge 530 while updating/installing trail forks maps, I was always getting an error, like yours. Apparently I needed to first login (create account) on trail forks on the device and then successfully updated via Garmin express.
Just received mine last night and was having similar problem but with North America updates. Install error message every time. I was connecting on my iMac through a USB hub so I closed out of Garmin Express and connected the Fenix 6 directly to a port on the back of the iMac. Rebooted and everything worked. Does not seem to like a USB hub for me.
Hi I have solve my problem. My Fenix 6 Sapphire was not a correct one. It had serial number of a Sapphire but it was a gorrila glas version and probably other issues are cause of the mixup in device. It returned it to the shop and they investigated it. All serial numbers and product code were correct but clearly the device was a complete other type. They replaced it with a correct one. Clearly stating its a sapphire version on the back plate. Now I'm installing the topoActive Europe 2019.10 on it. With out issues. May be some strange mixup in the factory caused this.
Mine kept saying that it had map updates just like yours but kept failing as well. I went to garmin connect (web version) and noticed the little watch icon in the top right corner (labeled Device and Sync Status when you mouse over) had golf clubs on the list of things to sync. I deleted those. Then I went to gear, deleted all the clubs (I never created them), and then was able to sync through Garmin Express.
After I did this, it no longer said there was a map update available and I could sync. I don't think there ever were updated maps; I think it was just a bug displaying that updates were available when they weren't because there was something that needed to be synced.
I have the same. I have tried reinstalling Express, tried to update on my Mac, on my Windows, freed up space (20Gb) on the watch, changed Wifi connections, there is definitely an issue that Garmin may need to resolve
Is there any way to limit what goes into an .img file so it has just basic mapping capabilities? Remove routing information, enhanced display information, POI information, etc? That way more map information can be squeezed into the 20mb storage.
