Update - As already stated the Spiel is the biggest games event in the
European calendar and sees people travelling from all over the world.
But to add a little more colour to that statement, it occupies 44,100
square meters of exhibition space for 4 days, from 10am and till 7pm,
with over 760 exhibitors from 31 nations and 400 new games being
released. Last year it attracted over 150,000 people (a revised figure
from my earlier 200,000 (sorry) based on a more accurate source).
The two most surprising things to me was the complete cross section of
society at the show, so unlike an event in the UK and the amount of
space devoted to allowing you to try the games out with no hard sell.
In fact no sell at all when you had finished playing the game you can
just walk off. There is more info and links to games acquired and
photos from the four days at the bottom of my blog post for Essen
should anybody be interested
