Hi all,

Has anyone ever created a staff-led RPG (one-off or campaign) for
teens? We're currently looking at doing this in my library. We have
two experienced GMs on staff, but both feel that the RPG needs to be
tied to the library services or, preferably more interactive, like an
ARG/murder mystery/scavenger hunt.

Does anyone have any experience with these (and were they successful)?
Can you recommend any of the activities (or suggest how many staff
members we might need)?

Thanks,
Emily

No experience with these in a library but it sounds really intriguing
and fun. I'll be watching to see if you get any replies!

Hi Emily,

I did a kind of junior standalone RPG as a Summer Reading Activity a
couple of years ago. It fitted the theme of the time which was all about
heroic fantasy and other worlds.

I used the rules and character sheets from the Steve Jackson and Ian
Livingstone Fighting Fantasy gamebooks since they are simple and
familiar to many.

I used some brilliant print and play minis and dungeon tiles from a web
published game called Dungeon Plungin. They were just right for my
slightly younger audience since they look cool but not overly
bloodthirsty:

The adventure itself I wrote myself when I couldn't find any free
scenarios I liked. That allowed me to link it up directly with the SRC
by using the characters and situations from the SRC story in my
adventure which was great.

I've attached it but with the huge caveat that it was only ever intended
for me to use so it's a little scratchy. Feel free to use, amend or
ignore it altogether.

I also managed to get a little library instruction into my game; at a
couple of points in the game they needed to find books on shelves using
the real library catalogue. We also had them trying to build with Jenga
to a given height while I tried to stop them by placing dwarves in all
the best places, had them designing a fiendish trap to be sprung on the
next group to play the game and finished with a creative writing/drawing
competition to see what secrets the Golden Book held.

Loads of fun and you can see some pictures of it at slide 9 of this
presentation:

I'm also thinking of running a couple of taster games using the recent
D&D Red Box and maybe see if I can get some World Wide D&D game kits if
they do that again this year.

Let us know how you get on with your RPG sessions,

Carl.

Hi all,

Thanks,
Emily

And you always think of something else just as you hit the send button
don't you? :-)

This (mainly American) discussion list is full of people play RPGs of
all kinds with their children from about 5 upwards:
