Passive euthanasia occurs when the patient dies because the medical professionals either don't do something necessary to keep the patient alive, or when they stop doing something that is keeping the patient alive.

Some medical people like this idea. They think it allows them to provide a patient with the death they want without having to deal with the difficult moral problems they would face if they deliberately killed that person.

Switching off a respirator requires someone to carry out the action of throwing the switch. If the patient dies as a result of the doctor switching off the respirator then although it's certainly true that the patient dies from lung cancer (or whatever), it's also true that the immediate cause of their death is the switching off of the breathing machine.

The doctrine that it makes an ethical difference whether an agent actively intervenes to bring about a result, or omits to act in circumstances in which it is foreseen that as a result of the omission the same result occurs.

Thus suppose I wish you dead, if I act to bring about your death I am a murderer, but if I happily discover you in danger of death, and fail to act to save you, I am not acting, and therefore, according to the doctrine, not a murderer.

According to the doctrine of acts and omissions Smith is morally guiltier than Jones, since he actively killed the child, while Jones just allowed the boy to die. In law Smith is guilty of murder and Jones isn't guilty of anything.

Of course you can't. But if you don't find the difference between killing and letting die persuasive in the Smith/Jones case, you shouldn't find it effective in the case of the well-meaning doctor and euthanasia.

The Smith/Jones case partly depends on us paying no attention to the intentions of Smith and Jones. But in most cases of right and wrong we do think that intention matters, and if we were asked, we would probably say that Smith was a worse person than Jones, because he intended to kill.

Suppose that the reason the doctor didn't save Brown was that he was already in the middle of saving Green, and if he left Green to save Brown, Green would die. In that case, we might think that the doctor had a good defence against accusations of unethical behaviour.

Doctors faced with the problem of an incurable patient who wants to die have often felt it was morally better to withdraw treatment from a patient and let the patient die than to kill the patient (perhaps with a lethal injection).

Let's suppose that the reason A wants to die is because he wants to stop suffering pain, and that that's the reason the doctor is willing to allow euthanasia in each case. Active euthanasia reduces the total amount of pain A suffers, and so active euthanasia should be preferred in this case.

To accept this argument we have to agree that the best action is one the which causes the greatest happiness (or perhaps the least unhappiness) for the patient (and perhaps for the patient's relatives and carers too). Not everyone would agree that this is the right way to argue.

The rule that we should treat other people as we would like them to treat us also seems to support euthanasia, if we would want to be put out of our misery if we were in A's position. But this isn't necessarily so:

"I've been meaning to write a note about 'Solo' after watching the film myself and because of my schedule I could only get the time today. I saw it. And it's turned out much better than I could ever imagine it. I loved every second of it," Dulquer wrote in his Facebook post on Sunday night.

"The issues might be in terms of language, because it is a bilingual and maybe the Shekhar track needed longer screen time. But, I absolutely loved the film. The original version. The version my director, Bejoy Nambiar envisioned. Films like Solo are any actor's dream. I loved it the moment I heard it. I loved every second of shooting it," he said.

Dulquer said he would do films like "Solo" again because he wants to constantly do "different" films. But he said he doesn't understand why a certain section of the audience don't like different cinema.

"7 billion humans walk the earth. There is bound to be that many stories. That many issues, that many conflicts or differences. If you are not familiar with it, doesn't make it go away. If you are not aware of it, doesn't make it wrong. Cause if you do, you just run the risk of being ignorant. Or judgmental. Or both. We are only human. So why judge," he asked.

"The Rudra story in 'Solo', it breaks my heart. It excited all of us actors. Be it Nasser sir, Hasini ma'am, Neha (Sharma) or me, we were kicked that it was so unique and bold. It's based on true incidents and there have been several news stories like it. We wanted to make a film about it. We thought the best way to tell it was through humour. So when people say it became unintentionally funny I don't get it," he said.

"The sequence where the amazing Suhasini ma'am in a stellar performance breaks the news to my character Rudra has been for me one of the greatest scenes in my cinematic career. It was a single shot and I had to interpret it how I deemed best. For an actor like me, that was new and unprecedented. With no reference point, I enjoyed that more than any scene in my life because it's different from anything else," he said.

"It was funny when Bejoy (writer-director Bejoy Nambiar) told us about it. It was funny when he called cut. It was funny during dub and it was funny when I saw it on screen. Of course, the characters won't make it a comedy.

"They will be sad and broken and awkward on screen, especially Rudra. Sadly because it was awkward people didn't understand if they were laughing with us (the makers) or laughing at us. Dark comedies are meant to be awkward. Always have been. That was our intention," he explained

"So mocking it (the film), booing in theatres, spreading negativity and hate and degrading the film because you didn't get it, just kills the film. It breaks our hearts, breaks our spirit, and kills the courage you gave me all along. So I beg you. Don't kill 'Solo'. Give it a go with an open mind and you will have a blast with the film," he said.

"Do not use a cannon to kill a mosquito." This quote has been attributed to the Chinese philosopher Confucius (551-478 BCE) who lived during the Tang Dynasty in ancient China. Although it is possible that Confucius would never have used the word 'cannon' because gunpowder was only invented about 1300 years after Confucius' time, the message of the saying is what is important and still relevant. It means to not overthink a problem and to find the simplest answers to the questions and problems life throws at you.

My bath was a mess for the better part of 3 weeks with the shower drain clogged and extremely sluggish. For 3 weeks I tried almost everything. I opened the metal drain cover, unscrewed the PVC drain pan inside, and then used a long wire deep inside to try and clear out some of the gunk inside. There really wasn't any that was blocking the flow of water. The shower was a bit better after this although it was still sluggish with the water refusing to go down the drain. After a few days, I opened the drain again and prepared a home made concoction of baking soda and vinegar and flushed it down the drain with hot water. That didn't do much either. I also put a hair catching apparatus inside the drain. However, there was still almost no change in the speed of water going down. A further few days later, I bought a heavy duty chemical that was advertised to work with the toughest clogs. That didn't work either and it was just money down the umm... drain.

After about three weeks I decided to seek professional help and was about to call a plumber when I noticed the plunger, which I hadn't bothered with, and decided to use it. I hadn't thought of using it in the first place because it was after all a simple plunger and there are fancier ways of doing things. Why would the plunger work when expensive chemicals didn't? So, with zero expectations, I took the plunger, put it on the drain, and gave it a few rapid thrusts for about ten seconds or so. The standing water swirled, gurgled, and gushed down the drain with a renewed fury. The water was gone in seconds. It was just an air-pocket or an air-bubble somewhere in the drain pipe. The drain has been trouble free ever since. It is a lesson to not overthink a problem and to use the simplest tools first. A lesson you can use anywhere. Use the proverbial plunger in your work projects. You don't need fancy when simple will do the job. A newspaper would kill the mosquito, you don't need a cannon.

[TR was shot in an assasination attempt by John Schrank, who had been having disturbing dreams about TR's predecessor, William McKinley and also thought that no president should serve more than two terms.

Schrank spent the rest of his life in a mental institution. No one came to visit him. He died shortly after Franklin Delano Roosevelt, TR's fifth cousin, was elected to a third term. Schrank had stalked TR for thousands of miles before getting a clear shot at him in Milwaukee. Schrank was caught on the spot.]
