Kyon Ki (transl. Because) is a 2005 Hindi romantic drama film written and directed by Priyadarshan and produced by Sunil Manchanda and Mukesh Talreja. The film is a remake of Priyadarshan's own 1986 Malayalam film Thalavattam which in turn was inspired by the 1975 movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest which was adapted from Ken Kesey's 1962 novel of the same name.
The film stars Salman Khan, Jackie Shroff, Kareena Kapoor, Suniel Shetty, Rimi Sen and Om Puri in pivotal roles, and tells the story of Anand, a mental patient whose past draws a female doctor, Tanvi, close to him, testing her own beliefs and challenging her authoritarian father, the administrator of the sanatorium in which Anand has been admitted.
Sir Richard's Mental Sanatorium is run by the strict and authoritative Doctor Jogichand Khurana, along with the other two main doctors, Sunil and Tanvi Khurana, who is the daughter of Khurana. Tanvi has treated a female patient who wears no. 36; her process of doing so has always been caring and gentle, rebelling against Khurana's inhumane ways of dealing with mentally ill patients. As she gets discharged, Tanvi doesn't get acknowledged for her efforts, which devastate her and since then, she has become embittered and vows to never come close to any patient, especially no. 36.
A young man, Anand Rai Singhania , is brought to the mental sanatorium by a court order. His elder brother requests the doctors to admit him immediately. However, they insist on evaluating his mental condition before taking any decision. On being asked a few questions, Anand Rai Singhania does not show any signs of insanity, and the doctors conclude that there is nothing wrong with him. Just then, Anand spots a housefly on the table. He tries to capture it but it evades him. While Anand's brother insists with the doctors, Anand suddenly becomes very violent, picking up a club and using it to hit everything the fly lands on. This convinces the doctors that he is indeed insane, and they finally admit him.
Anand tries to make friends with other patients in the sanatorium. Sunil develops a caring bond with Anand, as it is revealed that Sunil was made a doctor by Anand's father. Anand makes a commotion almost every day and acts childish which upsets Tanvi and she demands that Anand is thrown out from the asylum. Sunil finds Anand's diary and gives it to Tanvi, who finds out about Anand's sad past after reading his diary.
Anand was in love with Maya , a girl who was his childhood friend and later became his fiancée. However, on their wedding day, Maya reveals that she never loved Anand and only agreed to marry him because of his wealth. She runs away with her lover Raj , leaving Anand heartbroken and devastated. Anand becomes depressed and tries to commit suicide by driving his car into a river. However, he survives and is rescued by some fishermen. He loses his memory and forgets everything about his past life.
One day, he sees Maya's picture in a newspaper and regains his memory. He decides to find her and kill her for betraying him. He tracks her down to a hotel where she is staying with Raj. He confronts them and shoots them both dead. He then calls his brother and confesses his crime. His brother advises him to surrender to the police but Anand refuses and says that he will kill himself too. He shoots himself in the head but survives again and is arrested by the police.
After reading his diary, Tanvi feels sorry for Anand and sympathizes with him. She realizes that he is not insane but just traumatized by his past. She decides to help him recover from his mental state and bring him back to normal life. She starts spending more time with him and treats him with love and compassion. She also gives him no. 36 as his new identity in the sanatorium.
Anand gradually responds to Tanvi's treatment and starts showing signs of improvement. He becomes more cheerful and friendly with the other patients and staff. He also develops feelings for Tanvi and expresses his gratitude to her for saving his life. Tanvi also falls in love with him and confesses her feelings to him. They decide to elope together and start a new life.
However, their plan is foiled by Khurana, who finds out about their relationship and disapproves of it. He considers Anand a criminal and a danger to society. He also thinks that Tanvi is betraying her profession and her family by falling in love with a patient. He decides to separate them and punish them both. He orders Sunil to give Anand a shock treatment that will erase his memory and make him a vegetable. Sunil reluctantly agrees to do so, fearing Khurana's wrath.
Tanvi learns about Khurana's plan and tries to stop him. She pleads with him to spare Anand and let them go. She also reveals that she is pregnant with Anand's child. Khurana is shocked and enraged by this revelation. He refuses to listen to Tanvi and accuses her of being a disgrace to him and his profession. He slaps her hard and locks her in a room.
Anand is taken to the shock treatment room where Sunil prepares to administer the electric shocks to him. Anand begs Sunil to spare him and let him go with Tanvi. Sunil feels sorry for Anand but is helpless to do anything. He switches on the machine and gives Anand the first shock. Anand screams in pain and loses consciousness.
Tanvi manages to escape from the room and runs towards the shock treatment room. She reaches there just as Sunil is about to give Anand the second shock. She pushes Sunil away and hugs Anand, trying to revive him. She tells him that she loves him and that they have a child. Anand opens his eyes and smiles at her. He tells her that he loves her too and that he is happy to have a child with her.
However, before they can embrace each other, Khurana arrives at the scene with some security guards. He orders them to separate Tanvi and Anand and take them away. Tanvi resists and clings to Anand, refusing to let him go. Khurana pushes her away from Anand and slaps her again. He then grabs Anand by his hair and drags him towards the machine.
Anand struggles to free himself from Khurana's grip and calls out for Tanvi. Tanvi also tries to reach Anand but is held back by the guards. She watches in horror as Khurana places the electrodes on Anand's temples and switches on the machine again.
Anand receives the second shock, which proves fatal for him. He dies instantly, leaving Tanvi shattered and heartbroken. She screams out his name and collapses on the floor, crying uncontrollably.
The film ends with a voice-over of Anand saying that he has finally found peace in death, after suffering so much in life.
