A Craftsman curved claw hammer to crack coco and hang
portraits, a tape measure to remind her waist she eats
mang too often, fifteen scattered rusty pennies to
help Tito with math homework or sink into a nine day
candle to cut Doa Elsa's evil eye on any given day,
five slightly bent nails pulled from the living room wall
that held portraits proving they danced merengue
once, a red silk ribbon to tie his picture to her sweaty
discount store underwear to keep him from falling back
into Tanya's bed, wrinkled menus from the Goodie- Goodie
Thai restaurant on Cruger she treats herself to when
her sister mocks her for never getting a passport or
mispronouncing Pinot Noir, or not having any Sears
family portraits, a ball of white yarn to wrap around
pasteles every Christmas or to secure lucky leaves above
the doorway when he drinks both their paychecks, film from
an outdated Kodak she won't develop to avoid seeing the
exact day she lost her looks on his knuckles, ginger candy
from the Korean market she reluctantly pushes in her
mouth every time he dares her to leave, every time her
tongue lashes a familiar whip to her body, and when
her voice mimics her sister's burn, Diamond long stick
matches for lighting the broken pilot light and the
candles that keep her bowing to him.

On "In Leticia's Kitchen Drawer"
This poem was developed from a prompt given by Cheryl Boyce Taylor during a workshop I attended at Cave Canem. At the time I was gathering and writing poems for an anthology I was developing titled The Abuela Stories Project honoring distinct grandmothers and the lessons they offer new generations.
A junk drawer holds items people refuse to discard; everything from ketchup packets, safety pins to old batteries and loose change. These objects are symbolic of the lives people live and the relationships they belong to. They are artifacts tied to both the quotidian and the idiosyncratic life of the owner. The drawer is a subconscious storage unit; a holding port of the owner where the important and the unimportant share space, experience and storytelling.
When thinking of Leticia, a fictional character heavily inspired by many cross- generational women in my family, I wanted her drawer to embody who she was, who she desired to be and the woman she could not stop being. Her drawer was set in her kitchen, the place where she spent most of her time but also a place of transformation where she could nurture or destroy, bless or curse, pray or prey for her husband. Each item in the drawer serves a purpose physically and spiritually; each one with a story of Leticia's triumph or unraveling. Leticia reminds us of the stories we have collected or hidden in our own junk drawers.

I found this vintage hutch secondhand online (I think it was around $50?), removed the top portion and sanded it down to bare wood. It was the perfect size to hold our microwave, toaster, cups/barware, and drink shelf on top. It also has a drawer where we keep our mugs and coffee.
I also bought this slightly different tray set to have more configuration options between the drawers. The right drawer holds pens, flashlights, batteries, keys, chargers, tape, etc. The arrangement has changed slightly depending on our storage needs.
On the bottom tray, we keep our hand vacuum with attachments and miscellaneous household supplies. For the top drawer, I found these inexpensive tray organizers to corral our smaller household parts like painting supplies, hooks, screws, anchors and nails.
Rather than adding an upper cabinet, I wanted to find something unique and unexpected (like our vintage hutch) for our dry food storage. Enter this barrister bookcase I scored secondhand online, then refinished and frosted the glass:
Lovely kitchen. I am currently designing my kitchen remodel. I love the look of open shelving but I am very concerned about the cleaning aspect. Our kitchen has heavy use and I wonder if it is actually practical as well as pretty?
One of the things that bothered me about our old kitchen was the amount of stuff that lived out on the countertops. We had so many items plugged in and the cords drove me bonkers. I vowed that in the new kitchen we would find a way to manage our electronics and figure out how to hide anything that needed power.
We first realized that a charging drawer was an option when we were going through the KraftMaid booklet while shopping for our kitchen cabinets. They have tons of ways to upgrade each and every drawer or cabinet, but of course, these come with big price tags. We were tempted to just go ahead and get the charging drawer through them, but in the end, Finn decided that he wanted to shop around and find one that he could add himself once the kitchen was done.

This DIY custom kitchen drawer organizer was so easy to make and cost less than $10 for the entire project. I am SO THRILLED with how much better my kitchen drawers look!! They drove me crazy when they were a jumbled mess! I was constantly digging through junk and could never find what I was looking for in the tangle of whisks and tongs and spatulas.
First I removed the drawer, took everything out, and sorted everything in the drawer by type: scoops, whisks, spatulas, cutters, etc. Then I placed everything back in the drawer, arranging it like a puzzle so they would all fit.
I used Jenga blocks as barriers to give me an idea of where the dividers would go. At first I was going to use masking tape, but Kevin suggested I use Jenga blocks, and I am never one to argue with board games.
We glued the boards to each other while the drawer held the boards in place. Using the drawer as a guide helped hold the shape of the dividers and keep the pieces lined up so we knew we were still on track.
Since we had the drawer out anyway, we also installed full extension drawer slides, which are an absolute must for getting the most real estate out of your drawers. We would not have been able to use that back storage slot (with the funnel and pizza cutter) without full extension drawer slides.
Make sure you have WD-40 on hand if you are going to install new drawer slides. We had to generously spray the new slides with WD-40 and open and shut the drawer about 100 times to get it opening and closing smoothly again.
Thank you for a fabulous idea. We made these for our 3 kitchen utensil drawers and I am just so happy to have a permanent solution to my messy drawers! We used your exact products and the hardest part of the entire project was deciding which direction to make the dividers. It was like solving a puzzle and fun to make them just for my items. Thanks again for a fantastic solution.
Reading these comments has baffled me. Where in the universe was this blog written that there are all these women with husbands. Not only that, but husbands who HELP them?
None of you are millennial 34 year olds, right? That must be it.
Still, mind blown.
I read the blog to see where to get the wood, the rest is easy enough. I use my trusty coping saw for everything. A sponge sand block and on occasion a rotary tool comes in handy, too. Thanks for the inspiration and the existential crisis.
Just finished building these for three drawers in our new home. We tried to purchase something, but nothing optimized the drawer space like this. I already had the craft wood in my shop and it took no time to create and build them. I did try gorilla glue on the high use silverware drawer to see if that holds up better. The other two I used the Loctite adhesive. Thanks for the great idea. My wife loves them.
Excellent demonstration! I have awkward drawers and this is going to be perfect! And I like kitchen gadgets so now I can finally organize them. And best thing yet you have the same cutlery I do and I loathe my current organizer and have never found one I like. Thank you thank you !!
I read this blog to create my own drawer organizers which I now feel I can approach, thanks to your blog. I was even more excited to read about the full extension drawer slides. My drawers already have regular drawer slides and wanted to consider installing the full extension drawer slides. Is it simply to install them? I would love to see another blog from you demonstrating how to install full extension drawer, or could you point to a resource showing how to do just that! Thanks for your terrific solutions!
