Dear students,

Please find this thesis project below – this will be a long term ongoing program where multiple students could do research.

Reverb Channel: Role Reversal of AI in Online Media

  • In online media AI can play an ’evil’ role, or result in nasty side effects: hunting for clicks, maximizing engagement, exaggerate polarization, create filter bubbles and echochambers, or amplify fear and misinformation
  • Reverb Channel is a research platform by ACED that aims we aim to reverse the role of AI and apply it for good causes, in this context of journalism x design x (AI) technology. The core of the platform is a collection of links to millions of news articles in Dutch scraped from a variety of sources.
  • The student is free to define it’s own research problem, as long as it fits the the context above, for example use AI and machine learning to:
    • Uncover ideology spaces or political dimensions, make bias or framing visible, detect junk news / fake news / commercial content, provide diversity in news recommendations, recognize propaganda styles, fake news detection, humor/irony/sarcasm detection, inferring opinion dynamics, hate speech detection or classification, projects around specific topics such as COVID/antivac/conspiracies, polarization etc. etc.
  • Requires machine learning and text mining skills (Python), an interest in topics above and societal aspects of AI in general, and preferably Dutch speaking (but could create an English variant of this as well).
  • For info on see https://www.aced.site/en/programmes/reverb-channel and https://surfdrive.surf.nl/files/index.php/s/b1QZ0hwJRL0zs6j
