some comments about a few judges

01J112 - Randy Mitchell, Science HS

This guy is not a true circuit judge, and is more "reasonable" than circuit judges.  He appreciates good debate - to us, good debate means debaters who explain more, who use common sense more, while still following general circuit guidelines, but diverging on stuff that doesn't make sense in circuit.  He's not going to just vote for cards with no explanation.  He loves great debaters that explain super concisely and powerfully.   When he says he hates "theory dumps that are blippy",    he doesn't like tag words/jargon that is in place of good explanation.  He's always going to favor the debater who knows he knows what's up but also does the right explanation so we definitely want concise overviews, an extra sentence here or there to concisely/directly say the important conclusion ("This means that all of our allies would NEVER cooperate, because we xxx ..."

04J130 - Omar Abdel-Hamid, Parkway West HS

This is a young former debater.  The danger here is that they think they know more than they do.  With these judges, it's important to do two things simultaneously that might seem contradictory - (1) make sure they feel like you think they're a great judge, super smart, (2) make sure that you never debate in a way assuming that they know what they are doing.  The trick is to add an extra line of explanation here and there to make sure you're clear, don't use jargon by itself (always add a phrase that is not like league - "inherency is blah blah blah") - but still always adds more insight that contextually also explains what you are saying ("That means we outweigh" should either be translated, or add a because ... that shows what you really mean by that you outweigh).  For speed, you should go medium fast, enough hopefully that he doesn't think your'e going slow, but still be super clear and slow down on tags and be very good at being slow and clear and concise on explanations that are key.   Dont' assume he will flow every answer 100%, so make sure that you are clear/emphasizing on the important points.

The NFL put an updated PDF on their website, but its not the easiest to get to.  All the judges who lacked codes in the printed off packet are highlighted with yellow in this pdf.

If anyone has a contact in the tab room, is there any chance we could get an updated list of judge codes? There are like five pages of judges in the philosophy book without codes attached to their names... I've never seen that before. Preparing for debates is kind of hard when you only know they're "from" California or Missouri or whatever, especially because they could be hired from an entirely different part of the country.

If you know judge codes that aren't in the philosophy packet, please send them to me and I'll include them on future updates.

For shame, NFL!
