Liberty Golf Classic moving to West Winds
The Liberty Open Golf Classic on April 24 will be at a new venue this year, the West Winds Golf Club located off Gas House Pike at 11330 Country Club Road. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., with an 8:30 shotgun start. This change has been made to bring our annual event into the heart of Lancer territory.
Since 2005 the Libertytown Unionville Lions and the LHS Alumni Association have partnered in hosting the event, which benefits the scholarship funds of both service organizations. The 2014 Liberty Open raised over $4,000.
Anyone interested in golfing is encouraged to join us. The entry fee of $85 entitles golfers to driving range balls, a golfer gift, door prize tickets, a continental breakfast, snacks, beer, sodas, and a hot lunch featuring grilled burgers, sausages and hot dogs from the golf club. Carter Que of Mount Airy will provide the sides.
Mulligans, power balls, 50/50 raffle tickets, and additional door prize tickets are available at registration. We host a four-person team, Captain’s choice tournament. Prize holes include double or nothing, a $250 shootout, closest-to-the-pin contests on all par-3 holes, a longest drive award and a $10,000 hole-in-one prize hole. Team prizes are paid to teams taking first, second, and third place. Shane Rollins (class of 2002) has entered the winning team the last several years.
Old and new sponsors are always needed to make this tournament a success. Sponsor levels begin at $25 for cart sponsors and increase to an upper level of $2,500, for which the sponsor could rename the tournament. For $150 or more, we will provide a banner to be displayed at the sponsor’s business until the tournament, when our volunteers move it to the course. Discounts on foursomes are given at the $250 (Eagle) sponsor level.
Anyone who is not a golfer but wants to join in the fun is invited to volunteer at the event. Help is needed on Thursday evening, April 23, placing signs and banners on the course. On Friday, beginning at 7:30 a.m., we need help with registration, overseeing the prize holes, and then removing signs. Day-long volunteers are invited to join the golfer’s luncheon.

LHS Alumni Family Picnic
August 9
The fifth annual LHS Alumni picnic will be held Sunday, August 9, 2015, starting at 11 a.m. We will meet at the No. 2 Pavilion at the Old National Pike Park, which is on Md. 144, between New Market and Mount Airy. The event is scheduled to continue until late afternoon.
For motorcycle enthusiasts, there will be a three-hour ride starting at the Linganore High School front parking lot at 10 a.m. The $20 entry fee will include a boxed lunch and proceeds will benefit the LHS Alumni programs. We will meander along the country roads where some of us rode buses to school “back in the day.” Our ride will conclude at the park around 1 p.m., where we will join other alumni for the picnic and other festivities.
Past picnics have been attended by alumni of all ages, and their families. Planned activities include (but are not limited to) horseshoes, corn hole, pavilion volleyball, and lots of reminiscing. There is a huge playground near the pavilion for the “little people.”
The picnic is intended to be fun for families, and an opportunity for the Linganore High community to enjoy each other’s company. Bring your own lunch (charcoal grills are available) and drinks, and plan on having a great time.
Next Fiftieth Reunion featured at 2014 Dinner/Dance
The 22nd annual LHS Alumni Dinner/Dance was held at the Mount Airy American Legion. The theme for the evening was the 1964 World’s Fair held in New York City. During the program, Kaye Horr, Class of 1964, shared reflections on the close relationships among their classmates and told stories about their class trip to the World’s Fair. The Class of 1964 donated $1,170 to the LHS Alumni scholarship fund.
Members of the classes of 1969, 1974, and 1979 also held five-year reunions that evening.
Darlene Weller McFarland, 1970, was once again our DJ for the dance. Convenience Catering created a fine meal featuring fried chicken and pork. Charles Studio provided photography services. Anita Kent created decorations portraying many of the futuristic exhibits of the 1964 World’s Fair, evoking memories among all who had attended the 1964 World’s Fair.
Curtis Lawson, 1978, headed up the Silent Auction, encouraging attendees to have fun with it and bid generously. The auction generated over $1,000 for alumni projects. Our thanks to those making 18 donations to the Silent Auction: Merry Lu Pasley, Grimes Graphics, Karen White, Runkles Sign & Service, Lawson’s Outdoor Power Equipment (Mike and Curtis Lawson), Marty Burdette, Carter Que of Mt. Airy, Eva Pasley, Liberty Road Seafood, Toy Track Station, Ellen Smith, J-Bar-W Ranch (John, Johnny and Lisa Williams) and the LHS Alumni Association.
The date for the 23rd annual Dinner/Dance is Saturday, November 7, 2015, again at the Mt. Airy American Legion. It will be a catered dinner with a cash bar. Mark your calendars now! Reservation forms will be in the summer online newsletter edition and will be posted on the alumni Webpage at www.education.fcps.org/lhs/alumni.

Homecoming Parade, 2014
Over the years, the LHS Homecoming parade has evolved to meet the needs of the current school population. When I heard it was being held on Main Street in New Market in the fall of 2014, I was not convinced that it would be well attended or fun. I was wrong!
Curtis Lawson of Lawson’s of Woodbine worked out a plan to provide six zero-turn lawn tractors (courtesy of Lawson’s of New Market) that were used by the LHS Alumni squad. Anita Kent (class of ’74) made signs to hang on the mowers and six of us drove willy-nilly down Main Street and had a great time doing it.
Drivers included: Mason Stickley (’12), Jeremy Julian (’91), Doug Glock (’86), Bob Ensor (’80), Curtis Lawson (’77) and me, Sue Ensor (’74).
Thanks to Marty Burdette (‘87) and Karen White (’70) for help with coordination and communication. The event was enjoyable, well attended, and I hope we can make this a tradition!
50th Reunion – The Class of 1965 will gather at the Alumni Dinner/Dance on November 7. How can it be 50 years? Ruthie Martin Smith, class president, and a few classmates will update their mailing list and currently plan another event that same weekend. For details, contact Ruthie at 301-696-2084.
The Class of 1970 will also celebrate at the Alumni Dinner/Dance this year. Karen
Dotterer White, kj...@live.hood.edu, and Darlene Welller
McFarland, 410-875-2204, are spearheading an
effort to get more classmates out for their 45th Reunion. They encourage classmates to contact them.
They also plan a tour of the school for Friday
evening, November 6.
Class of
1975 President Sally Murphy Arnold
announces their 40th Reunion
will be held Sunday, June 7, with a luncheon buffet at Dutch’s Daughter in
Frederick. Classmates are also encouraged to put the Alumni Dinner/Dance on
their calendars. Contact Sally at 301-662-2246 for full details.
The Class of 1980 plans to celebrate their 35th Reunion at the Alumni Dinner/Dance on November 7. In addition, they are planning class-only activities for that weekend.
Diane McLain Rey, class president, can be contacted at writi...@comcast.net or 410-696-2084. Call a classmate and plan to attend!
