Liberty Golf Classic set for April 25
The Liberty Open Golf Classic will be held this year on April 25, 2014, at The Links at Challedon, north of Mount Airy. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., with an 8:30 shotgun start.
Since 2005 the Libertytown Unionville Lions and the LHS Alumni Association have partnered in hosting the event, which benefits both scholarship funds. The 2013 Liberty Open raised nearly $3,000.
Anyone interested in golfing is encouraged to join us. The entry fee of $85 entitles golfers to driving range balls, a golfer gift, door prize tickets, a continental breakfast, snacks, beer, sodas, and a hot lunch featuring pit pork done on the grounds by Urbana Lions Club President Sam Bailey and donated by LHS grad Steve Kent. Mulligans, power balls, 50/50 raffle tickets and additional door prize tickets are available at registration. We host a four-person team, Captain’s choice tournament. Prize holes include double or nothing, a $250 shootout, closest-to-the-pin contests on all par-3 holes, a longest drive award and a $10,000 hole-in-one prize hole. Team prizes are paid to teams taking first, second, and third place. Shane Rollins, ’02, has entered the winning team the last two years.
Old and new sponsors are always needed to make this tournament a success. Sponsor levels begin at $25 for cart sponsors and increase to an upper level of $2,500, for which the sponsor could rename the tournament. For $150 or more, we will make sponsors a banner to be displayed at your business until the tournament, when our volunteers move it to the course. Discounts on foursomes begin at the $50 sponsorship level.
Anyone wanting to join in the fun but who is not a golfer is invited to volunteer at the event. Help is needed on Thursday evening, April 24, placing signs and banners on the course. On Friday, beginning at 7:30 a.m. we need help with registration, overseeing the prize holes, and then removing signs. Day-long volunteers are invited to join the golfer’s luncheon.

The fourth annual LHS Alumni picnic will be held Sunday, August 10, 2014, starting at 11 a.m. We will meet at the No. 2 Pavilion at the Old National Pike Park, which is on Md. 144, between New Market and Mount Airy.
For motorcycle enthusiasts, there will be a three-hour ride starting at the Linganore High School front parking lot at 10 a.m. The $20 entry fee will include a boxed lunch and proceeds will benefit the LHS Alumni programs. We will meander along the country roads where some of us rode buses to school “back in the day.” Our ride will conclude at the park around 1 p.m., where we will join our other alumni for the picnic and other festivities.
Past picnics have been attended by alumni of all ages, and their families. Planned activities include (but are not limited to) horseshoes, corn hole, pavilion volleyball and lots of reminiscing. There is a huge playground near the pavilion for the “little people.”
The picnic is intended to be fun for families. Bring your own lunch (charcoal grills are available) and drinks and plan on having a great time.
Fiftieth Reunion featured at 2013 Dinner/dance
The 21st annual LHS Alumni Dinner/dance was held at the Mount Airy American Legion. During the program, hosted by Brad Podliska, class of 1992, the classes of 1963, 1968, 1973 and 1978 shared memories of their high school years. Podliska also entertained during the evening with his standup comedy routine.
The class of 1968 donated $1,780 to the LHS Alumni scholarship fund.
Darlene Weller McFarland ’70 was once again DJ for our dance. Doug Henley’s Convenience Catering created a fine meal featuring fried chicken and pit beef. Charles Studios provided photography services. Anita Kent provided decorations to transform the dining room appropriately for evoking fifty-year memories.
The date for the 22nd annual LHS Alumni Dinner/dance is Saturday, October 25, 2014, again at the Mount Airy American Legion. It will be catered, with a cash bar available. Mark your calendars now. Reservation forms will be available in the summer online newsletter edition.
Those making donations to the Silent Auction included: Merry Lu Pasley, Grimes Graphics, Karen White, Runkles Sign & Service, LHS Alumni, Lawson’s Outdoor Power Equipment (Curtis and Mike), the Class of 1968, Janet Grimm, Marty Burdette, and Flower Fashions.
Distinguished Grads, 2014
The 2013 Linganore High School Distinguished Graduates are Janice Dotterer O’Hara; David T. Maestri; Kirsten Ernst Brown; Winslow Burhans; and Kelly Edgeington Fiore. The awards were announced during the Twelfth Annual Honoree Induction Ceremony at the school, Nov. 26, 2013.
Janice Dotterer O’Hara, ’72, inducted for her contributions in academics, is assistant principal at New Market Elementary School. She worked from her home as a licensed daycare provider while raising four children, before earning a bachelor’s degree from Hood College. She became first a Frederick County teacher and then a reading specialist. She has since earned a master’s degree from McDaniel College and a doctorate from the University of Maryland, which named her “Top Terp Outstanding Educator” in 2004.
Kirsten Ernst Brown, ’90, was the humanities inductee. Assistant State’s Attorney, Chief of Violent Crimes, she has worked with Frederick County’s District Court for the last fourteen years after graduating from Frostburg State University, and the University of Baltimore School of Law.
She also is an instructor with the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office and the Frederick Police Department. A three-sport athlete in school (soccer, basketball, and track), she still lives an active life.
The Public Service inductee, Winslow F. Burhans III, ’83, is serving his fourth term as mayor of New Market. After graduating from the University of Maryland, he received a master’s in business administration from Hood College and is vice president of Burhans Cabinet Co., Inc., established by his father in 1968.
All of his four children have attended Linganore High School, including two current students and two graduates.
Kelly Edgeington Fiore, ’98, the arts inductee, has left her position as a Frederick High School English teacher to pursue writing novels in the young adult genre. In her most recent, Taste Test, the daughter of a barbeque restaurant owner decides to participate in a reality cooking show. Fiore is also a published poet.
Active in drama and on the yearbook staff while at Linganore, she prepared for her career with a bachelor’s degree in creative writing from Salisbury University and a master’s in fine arts from West Virginia University.
David T.
Maestri, ’01, was inducted for business
achievements that include creating the Facebook game Mob Wars. He is the
co-founder and chief product officer of Metamoki, headquartered in San
Francisco.
Although he attended the University of Maryland, his computer programming and entrepreneurial skills are largely self-taught. He worked as a programmer for Freewebs, Inc., before launching several technology startups.
In high school, he was known for programming friends’ graphing calculators to play games when not playing the trumpet in the concert and marching bands, or experimenting with synthesizers and electronic music equipment.

Description of Sponsorship Options
All sponsors receive recognition in the Liberty Open program booklet and on the Libertytown-Unionville Lions Club Website, www.L-U-LionsClub.com, the Lions Club Newsletter (The LionsHead), and the Linganore High School Alumni Association Online Newsletter. Platinum, Eagle and Birdie sponsors that make an early commitment will receive their banner prior to the Open, which may be displayed at their place of business until the day before the Open. Members of the Lions Club will collect the banners for display at the host golf course on the day of the event. The Open Committee is anxious to work with sponsors to maximize the marketing potential of their sponsorship.
Platinum Sponsor – Sponsorship includes naming rights for the Liberty Open and prominent display of sponsor participation on all banners and print material and other publicity. The Platinum Sponsor will receive prominent recognition of sponsorship on the www.L-U-Lionsclub.com Website. Also included is recognition as sponsor of the $10,000 hole-in-one contest. The Platinum sponsor receives eight complimentary spots in the golf outing and a large banner that may be displayed at the sponsor’s place of business with early commitment (see above). Requested donation is $2,500.
Eagle Sponsor – The Eagle sponsor is recognized as the sponsor of a major activity during the open. These include:
One of the three closest-to–the-pin holes
One of the two longest-drive holes
Sponsorship of the one driving range
Sponsorship of the single after-match shootout
Sponsorship of the single celebrity photo
Sponsorship of refreshments on the course – two available
Sponsorship of the single continental breakfast
Eagle sponsors receive a banner that may be displayed at their place of business prior to the Open, with early commitment (see above) and four complimentary spots in the Open. On the day of the Open, the sponsor’s banner will be displayed exclusively on the hole or activity the business chooses. Requested donation is $550. If the sponsor chooses not to use the complimentary spots, the requested donation is $250.
Birdie Sponsor – Sponsorship includes a banner that may be displayed at the sponsor’s place of business, with early commitment (see above). On the day of the Open, the sponsor’s banner will be displayed exclusively on a tee or green on the course. Requested donation is $150 to $249.

Cart Sponsor – The cart sponsor is recognized with signage placed on a golf cart. Requested donation is $25 to $49.
Sponsors are encouraged to provide giveaways and items that may be used in the Open participants “goody bags” or items that may be appropriate as raffle prizes. Sponsors are also encouraged to set up displays at or near their banner, including handouts or other material. Any display must be approved in advance by the golf committee.
General Rules, Guidelines, and Definition of Terms for Sponsors:
Sponsors are encouraged to provide items for prizes and raffles. This provides an additional opportunity to be recognized at the awards presentation.
Marketing activities and/or displays on the course must be approved in advance by the outing chairman and the management of the selected golf course.
An exclusive sponsorship means that no other sponsor will be recognized for the selected activity. Non-exclusive sponsorship means that a sponsor may share the sponsorship with additional sponsors. The committee will ensure that competing sponsors will not be assigned to the same tee or green.
The appearance of a guest celebrity may not be confirmed at the time information is mailed to participants and sponsors. We anticipate that Miss Frederick will be available.
