Dinner/dance deadline approaching

The Linganore High School Alumni Association plans to hold its annual dinner/dance at the Frederick American Legion in the western section of Frederick, where we held it last year. The legion is located at 1450 Taney Avenue in Frederick. The 27th annual event will be held Saturday evening, November 10.

We will honor the Class of 1968, as its members celebrate their fiftieth reunion. Also celebrating will be other classes with five-year anniversaries: the classes of 1973, 1978, and 1983. While all alumni are welcomed, the program will include time for each of these classes celebrating special reunions to speak.

Everyone attending seems to enjoy the evening that includes dinner, lots of time for reminiscing, a short program, and dancing,

The evening begins with mingling around a punch bowl and snacks, as well as a cash bar, all starting at 5:30 p.m.

Different photographers this year, Tom and Shirley Miller Stevens, will not be charging for their services but will post online, where you can download and then have photos you would like printed commercially. They will take couples photos, group photos, and class photos, beginning at 6 p.m. You can print any or all of the couple, group, or class photos taken during the social hour. If you are in one of the reunion classes, please be sure to arrive by 6:15, when the class photos are staged. These photographs are great “keepsakes” from the dinner/dance.

The silent and Chinese auctions, organized by a not-so-silent auctioneer, Curtis Lawson, Class of ’78, has become a favorite part of the agenda. Consider donating something you think alumni might appreciate. Contact Curtis at clawson924@YAIKO, use linganor...@gmail.com, call Marty Burdette at 301-6625-0775, or simply bring it the night of the dinner/dance.. The auction bidding will be open from 5:30 until 9:30, when high bidders will be announced, and can claim their prizes.

Dinner begins at 6:45 p.m., highlighted by fried chicken and all your favorites, prepared by American Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary, as they did last year.

Our favorite DJ, Darlene Weller McFarland,’70, will provide music for dancing from 9 until midnight. Darlene does a great job of mixing the music to keep everybody hopping.

The cost remains $30 per person, and only $10 for a dance-only ticket.

Plan now to join us for a great night with your LHS friends! There is a reservation form in this newsletter.

Requests for a table reserved for your group will be on a first-received, first-served basis.

This is also the perfect time to contribute to the alumni scholarship fund.

Please send your reservation, with payment, to reach Kaye Horr by Nov. 3, 2018.

The Class of 1963 is having its 55th reunion at the Alumni Dinner/Dance on Nov. 10, 2018. A separate letter was sent to class members on or about Sept. 21 with additional information.

Alumni award three college scholarships

The Linganore High School Alumni Association awarded three $1,000 scholarships this summer to Linganore graduates.

Carolyn Payne will be a freshman at the University of Maryland, College Park, planning on majoring in Civil Engineering and participating in the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program in the Honors College. At Linganore she was involved in pre-engineering classes. She was project manager of her senior capstone design group, as they developed a jacket that uses body heat to generate enough electricity to charge a cell phone. In addition to her activity with STEM, she was secretary of the Spanish National Honor Society, and hopes to study in Spain. In college, she plans to participate in Engineers Without Borders and Women in Engineering. Her career goal is to get a master’s degree and eventually manager her own civil engineering firm.

Breanna Lindsay will be a freshman at McDaniel College, with a double major in sociology and criminal justice, intending now to be a federal prosecutor. Her experience last summer attending the ALA Maryland Girls State program clarified her interest in making and upholding the law. Her favorite classes this year were AP Government and Political Science, augmented by Mock Trial and Student Government.

Lillian Johnson will be a sophomore at Marymount Manhattan College in New York, N.Y., this fall. She is majoring in Theatre Arts, concentrating in media arts, performance while planning to double-major in Film Production. A theatre class as a freshman sparked her interest, as did encouragement from a favorite teacher.

Her interest was augmented in high school by performing in plays, engaging in backstage technology, and directing other actors.

Payne, Lindsay, and Johnson were selected from a record 40 applicants.

Good attendance at golf fundraiser

The day was fair, the fairways were fine, and the friendships abounded as many veteran foursomes that have played in previous years returned for this year’s Liberty Open Golf Classic. The day was one of fun, good cheer and good food. This is the annual golf tournament co-sponsored by the Libertytown-Unionville Lions Club and the Linganore High School Alumni Association.

Participation was about the same as the previous year, and proceeds were similar, as well, good news since this is our major annual fundraiser.

The Liberty Road Seafood and Steak Catering service supplied us a well-anticipated warm, tasty, and filling meal.

The winning team from 2016 and 2017 (Bonnie O’Hearn ’86, and sisters Kelly Kern ’83, Klaudine Kern Radford ’84, and Karen Kern Voelinger ’80)

participated again, but this year four men took top honors. The team, led by Andy Baldwin, included three Linganore graduates Billy Bradshaw ’99, B.J. Veale ’97, and Dan Zebroski, ’96.

There were prizes for four closest-to-the-pin contests  and a 50-50 opportunity.

Proceeds have not been distributed, but when all expenses are cleared, we expect to have nearly $4,000 to add to our scholarship fund with the Frederick County Community Foundation, with the Lion getting an equal amount for their work supporting the community.

Nine months from now, we

(Clarence and Phyllis ’75), Willow Grove Farm (John ’79 and Kathy ’78 Lyons), and Woodbine Equipment and Supply (Curtis Lawson ’78).

Birdie Sponsors, contributing $150, included Gorsuch LLC (Dwight ’66, Susan ’69, Doug ’75, and Steve ’77), Steve and Kaye ’64 Horr, Musselman Excavating (Jeff Musselman ’83), New London Precision Instruments, Inc. (Skip, Rosalie ’64, and Matt ’93 Brightwell), and Paint, Patch and Partition (Shane and Pam ’77 Rollins).

Par Sponsors contributing between $50 and $149, were Jim ’68 and Barbara ’69 Ferguson, Paul and Carole ’63 Flynn, Joyce Grossnickle ’78, Mike ’66 and Donna ’66 Grossnickle, Dennis ’64 and Roxie Mullinix, and Gary and Karen ’70 White.

Cart Sponsors, for $25, included Marty Burdette, Sue Ensor (2) Lawson’s of New Market (4 – Michael Lawson), Tulip Pond Farm (Dave and Carole ’81 Doody), Lisa A. Williams Real Estate, and Woodbine Equipment (4 – Curtis Lawson ’78). Volunteers including Kaye Horr, Debbie Ripley, and Pam Rollins, kept the event running smoothly. Marty Burdette, Sue Ensor, and Anita Kent serve on the golf committee.

We had fun this year - if you join us next year, Friday, May 10, at Glade Valley Golf Club, you can have fun, too!

Alumni Calendar of Events

Nov. 10 Annual Dinner/Dance, 5:30 – 11:30 at FSK American Legion, Frederick

The calendar was pared down a bit this summer, as we did not participate in the Libertytown Volunteer Fire Company Carnival. In past years, we had a booth there all week.

Instead, Curtis Lawson displayed our alumni items at his commercial booth at the Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Company Carnival.

Because of poor attendance in the past few summers, we also dropped the annual picnic that had originally been paired with a motorcycle tour.

The board intends to offer opportunities for camaraderie between members of the Linganore family. If you have an
