Subject: Upcoming landlord-tenant mediation training event for West Oahu [press release]

Aloha Ms. Rezentes,

The Mediation Center of the Pacific (MCP) would like to inform you about an upcoming training for interested individuals in West Oahu that will address the need for landlord-tenant mediation. Often issues, such as house rules and rental payments, can cause rifts between landlords and tenants that can escalate to lawsuits and evictions, which can disqualify the tenant from receiving housing assistance if they even find another place to live. Mediation can address these issues early, and help landlords and tenants negotiate a solution between themselves.
This training opportunity may interest community members who attend your Board meetings. The full press release is below. Mahalo.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 29, 2017
volunteers needed to learn mediation skills for landlord-tenant matters
WAIANAE, HI, November 29, 2017 * The Mediation Center of the Pacific (MCP) is seeking volunteers to serve as mediators for a new Landlord-Tenant Mediation Program.  Selected volunteers will be required to participate in a 2-day mediation training on January 18-19, 2018 and then be available to mediate cases as they arise within West Oahu communities. The training will be held at the Honolulu Community Action Program’s Leeward Service Center (85-555 Farrington Hwy.) from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m..
MCP is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that has been serving Oahu’s communities since 1979.  MCP serves over 6,000 people annually through its mediation, dispute resolution and training programs.  Historically MCP has provided mediation services for landlords and tenants at court.  However, due to the limited time for the mediations and the fact that many tenants are too far behind in their rental payments to work out a payment plan, most cases result in eviction.  To encourage landlords and tenants to use mediation early, before filing an action in court, MCP created the Early Access Landlord-Tenant Mediation Program (EAM).  Through EAM, landlords and tenants may take as much time as they need to discuss the situation and work out agreements with the assistance of an impartial mediator.  To ensure that these services are easily accessible, MCP is recruiting and training volunteers from West Oahu, to mediate the cases that arise within West Oahu communities.  All new mediators will be mentored by experienced mentors following the two-day training.
If you are interested in applying to become a volunteer mediator for landlord-tenant matters in West Oahu communities, contact Katie Ranney, Special Programs Coordinator, at ka...@mediatehawaii.org or 521-6767.  Applicants will be considered based on their background and availability.
