1) You only see the real unit symbol if it's dead
2) You only see the real unit symbol if it's dead or if your guys can
actually see it right now
3) You only see the real unit symbol if you have seen the unit at some
point during the game.
The reality seems to be somewhere between #1 and #2.
4) You only see the real unit symbol if it's an exec, a flag, a mine, or
dead.
I can't recall any cases where this didn't match.

No, I just saw a Max on a game with WFT. It actually messed me up,
because my first glance showed only one question mark, so I thought he had
only one guy left, but when I re-ran the turn, I noted the Max was not
question marked.

OK, it's actually broken. In placement games you get one behavior, in
non-placement games another, and there is no exception for your team,
which is silly.
The proper behavior is to show the actual icon of any visible units,
dead units, flags, mines, and Execs, and mystery icons for any units
that are currently alive and hidden.
I'm fixing it for v23.
