Founded in 1993, the National Youth Advocacy Coalition (NYAC) is a social justice organization that advocates for and with young people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ) in an effort to end discrimination against these youth and to ensure their physical and emotional well-being. Through capacity building, advocacy and youth engagement, NYAC is building a generation of impact.
POSITION OVERVIEW
NYAC seeks an Executive Director who will be responsible for carrying out the mission, vision and day-to-day operations of the organization. The Executive Director will report directly to the Board of Directors and work in close collaboration with the Executive Committee, Board Chair and local, state & national youth, LGBTQ and social justice organizations.
This full-time salaried position with health benefits and paid vacation is based in Washington, DC. Salary is based on experience. Working nights and weekends may be required, including periodic travel. The primary responsibilities of the Executive Director include, but are not limited to, the following:
Administration & Management:
1.Serve as chief administrator and be responsible for the oversight of organizational policies, ensuring that legal responsibilities are met;
2. In conjunction with the Board Treasurer, keep the Board of Directors informed about the financial status of the organization;
3. Hire, fire, supervise and support staff and consultants;
4. Ensure that staff and consultants operate in accordance with the mission & vision of the organization;
5. Ensure that each staff member and consultant is empowered to perform their best;
6. Ensure implementation of personnel policies and staff evaluations; and
7. Ensure that appropriate training and professional growth opportunities are provided to staff that enhance their political, practical and personal development.
Fundraising & Fiscal Management:
1. In conjunction with the Board Treasurer, prepare annual operating budget for review and approval by Board of Directors;
2. Raise funds to meet the annual budget;
3. Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy to diversify the funding base of organization through foundations, grassroots fundraising, in-kind donations and major donor cultivation that engages Board of Directors, staff, community members and allies; and
4. Manage cash flow of the organization, prepare monthly financial reports for the Board of Directors and ensure all federal taxes are filed in a timely fashion, with support of Board Treasurer and Accountant.
Youth Engagement & Program Support:
1. Develop and implement a national campaign engaging youth through the Youth Accountability Council, National Youth Summits & listening sessions in different cities;
2. Act as liaison with leaders of NYAC network organizations;
3. Develop NYAC’s capacity building and advocacy efforts as directed by the Youth Accountability Council, NYAC Network, and Board of Directors; and
4. Create and expand programs to develop and support LGBTQ youth leadership nationwide.
Organizational & Board Development:
1. Serve as a liaison between staff and the Board of Directors (specifically the Board Chair) and to support the Board in accomplishing the following;
2. Provide leadership and strategic vision for organization;
3. Develop, implement and evaluate an annual work plan to advance the strategic vision for organization;
4. Ensure ongoing programming and advocacy efforts remain consistent with the organization’s mission, vision and values;
5. Provide direction and focus to engage the resources, energy and development of the Board; and
6. Actively realize NYAC’s mission to be a social justice and anti-oppression organization.
Communications:
1. Oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive communications program that includes: weekly email update, maintaining NYAC website, media advisories, press releases, Letters to the Editor & Opinion Editorials on an as needed basis, and develop and implement new media strategy that includes maintaining NYAC Blog, Facebook page and Twitter account;
2. Serve as the primary spokesperson to the public at large, media, congressional & administration members, policy makers, and other local, state & national youth, LGBTQ and social justice organizations;
3. Participate in national strategic alliances and coalitions that build the visibility and power of the organization’s work; and
4. Identify and participate in opportunities to promote the organization’s profile, goals and advocacy through ongoing networking with relevant stakeholders.
Desired Skills & Experience:
1. Proven ability to raise funds from multiple sources, including the ability to cultivate major donors, develop relationships with foundations, and implement grassroots fundraising campaigns;
2. Familiarity with foundations focused on youth, the LGBTQ community, and social justice;
3. Experience with staff development and management, human resources, and personnel matters;
4. Ability to assess and prioritize organizational needs;
5. Experience developing and reading budgets, financial statements, cash flow projections, non-profit compliance, and financial management systems;
6. Ability to create a vision and the tools to implement it, using work plans and other accountability systems;
7. Background in youth, LGBTQ and/or other social justice programming, organizing and/or advocacy;
8. Prior experience working with a Board of Directors, especially ones with youth members;
9. Ability to handle difficult or stressful situations and a fast-paced work environment;
10. Strong interpersonal, writing, listening, and public speaking skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with a diverse range of people; and
11. Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
