Belarusian LGBT activists need your help.
The campaign initiated in the European Parliament by Genowefa Grabowska
(PL), Justas Vincas Paleckis (LT) and Hannes Swoboda (AU) under the slogan
“Say YES to Cheaper Visas for Belarusians” is gaining popularity both within
the European Parliament and in Belarus. More than 100 signatures have been
already collected in support of the written declaration introduced by the
three members of the Parliament. In case more than 391 members of the
organization favour the declaration, text will be sent to the EU Council and
the Commission.
Belarusian LGBT activists actively supports this initiative through
collecting letters from Belarusian non-governmental groups, political
parties and civil initiatives.
Belarus remains the only country of the EU Eastern neighbourhood whose
citizens have to pay €60 for a single-entry Schengen visa. This sum amounts
to almost one third of the average monthly salary in the country. Lowering
visa costs and easing visa-issuing procedures would assist enormously in
preventing the isolation of the Belarusian people. It would also help
implement the EU's policy of supporting the democratisation process, through
facilitating people-to-people contacts between Belarusians and EU citizens.
Please write the following letter to your MEP or to as many MEPs as
possible. You can find their contact details here

SAMPLE LETTER
Dear ......
I would like to invite you to sign the enclosed written declaration No.
12/2008 in support of reducing the cost of obtaining a visa for Belarusian
citizens.
Do you know that:
The average monthly salary of a Belarusian young hospital doctor is 60
euros, which exactly equals the cost of obtaining a Schengen visa by a
Belarusian Citizen.
The total number of Belarusians who visited the EU is much lower than 5% of
all the Belarusian population.
The regime of President Alexander Lukashenko monopolised the
state-controlled media and threw a third of his main opponent's campaign
organizers into prison.
If you don't agree with it
Please sign Declaration Nr. 12
Belarusians need your support!
Be against limitation of freedom of travelling for the countries
with poor democracy!
Thank you in advance for your support in this initiative,
......
