Google Sidewiki

Posted: 23 Sep 2009 10:38 PM PDT

Google have just released a new feature called Google Sidewiki which allows you to leave a comment about any web page. The concept doesn't sound all that impressive, but I think it could prove to be a quite useful tool. Any comments about this site via Sidewiki are more than welcome.

Categories of Wanted Pages

Posted: 26 Sep 2009 05:18 PM PDT

I think it would be good to categorise Wanted Pages (eg. Asset Mgt, Records Mgt, IT), so the users of this website can navigate to the areas where they have expertise to contribute, and to the areas where do not have expertise to suggest a page.

Thanks, Leila Abbasova

Thanks for the suggestion Leila. I will see what I can come up with.
There is also a list of Stubs - pages that have been created, but with only very minimal content. I might try and convert the "Wanted Pages" to stubs & categorise them.

September Update

Posted: 29 Sep 2009 04:35 PM PDT

It is the end of September and the site's first birthday is only 13 days away (13 October).
There are now over 1950 pages on the site, and the 150th member signed up a couple of days ago.

Last week saw the greatest number of people visit the site (696) since I started using Google Analytics in November last year. Hopefully the number of people using the site will continue to grow in the next 12 months.

September innovations include;

  1. a Tutorial on how to get the most out of the site.
  2. Bundypedia a separate site created to show how Wikidot can be used to set up an Council Extranet or Community website.

Saving time & money through knowledge sharing.

Posted: 28 Sep 2009 10:17 PM PDT

Good point Darron. I guess I am trying to make a case for why sharing knowledge sharing is good for Councils, and I thought that trying to put a monetary figure against it might be the best way to convince some people. I will rename the forum, and add another named "Cost Effective Service Delivery".

Re: Ways to save money.

I would prefer this area to be focused on "More effective ways to improve services to the Community".
If we purely focus on "saving money" we could be dragged into the old "cost cutting" approaches like axing people - this will reduce costs and save money but at what expense (to service delivery).
Perhaps we could rename this section - "Cost Effective Service Delivery" with a lead in commentary on saving money without affecting services. This section could be a list of relevant case studies on how Councils have achieved this.
