I'm pleased to announce that FiberCorps is participating in this
year's Google Summer of Code (GSoC). For those that aren't familiar
with the program, it's Google's way of getting students introduced to
the open source development community/mindset. This is done by paying
students $5000 for the completion of an open source project that's
been proposed to and accepted by a participating organization. The
organization's role is to provide mentors to students that will help
guide design decisions & ensure completion of the projects.
GSoC is big into community engagement, so I've asked all applicants to
FiberCorps to join this discussion group. You'll likely see posts from
students requesting feedback on their proposals or asking for advice
on an issue they've encountered. Any help you can provide them would
be much appreciated.
We're also on the hunt for mentors, right now, so if anyone's
interested, let me know. We anticipate mentors needing to commit to
about 2 hours of their time a week during the ramp-up period
(4/30-5/22) & approx. 5 hours per week until 8/22. While there may not
be projects that you have expertise on, we'd like to also have some
general purpose mentors as backups in case primary mentors need to be
replaced.
Mentors should exhibit the following:
- Basic project management skills
- Effective communication skills
- Understanding of software development processes
If anyone is interested in mentoring for FiberCorps, please send me an
email or call me at
