He also consulted several historians, including Jonathan Mark Kenoyer and Michael Jansen, who are experts on the Indus Valley civilization.

The film was shot in Bhuj and Mumbai with brief schedules in Bhedaghat (Jabalpur) and Thane. The sets of the film were designed by Nitin Chandrakant Desai, who recreated the city of Mohenjo Daro based on the archaeological findings. The costumes were designed by Neeta Lulla, who used natural fabrics and vegetable dyes to create a realistic look.

The score and soundtrack of the film were composed by A.R. Rahman, with lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar. The film features eight songs, including "Tu Hai", "Sarsariya", "Mohenjo Mohenjo", and "Whispers of the Mind". The music received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Watch it for Hrithik Roshan's arresting performance." Rajeev Masand of CNN-News18 gave it 3 out of 5 stars and wrote: "Mohenjo Daro is far from Gowarikers best work, but its a decent entertainer nevertheless." Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express gave it 2.5 out of 5 stars and wrote: "Mohenjo Daro could have been a gripping adventure, but it is marred by a lopsided script and tepid action. Hrithik Roshan does his best to keep us watching."

However, some critics criticized the film for its historical inaccuracies, script, and direction. Anupama Chopra of Film Companion gave it 2 out of 5 stars and wrote: "Mohenjo Daro is a plodding, joyless, history lesson that is criminally careless with the facts. Ashutosh Gowariker squanders a terrific opportunity to create an engaging film about a fascinating period." Raja Sen of Rediff.com gave it 1.5 out of 5 stars and wrote: "Mohenjo Daro is a spectacularly daft film, one that makes Ra.One look like a work of genius. It is a film that believes in breastplates and heaving bosoms, in a hero who can do anything and in a heroine who can only do one thing: wait for the hero." Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV gave it 1 out of 5 stars and wrote: "Mohenjo Daro is as flat and insipid as the terrain of the Thar desert that forms its backdrop. It is devoid of any semblance of life. It is a monumental mess."

The film also underperformed at the box office. It had a worldwide gross of 108 crore against a budget of 115 crore, making it a flop.
