Inthis section, students have to understand the context in which an underlined word or phrase is used in a short passage and choose from four options (MCQ) the meaning of the word or phrase. Phrasal verbs are also frequently tested in this section.

This section tests a variety of questions related to grammar including prepositions (on, for, from, with), connectors (and, although, but, however), pronouns (which, who, this, these, they, them), subject-verb agreement (is, was, are, were) and finally, phrasal verbs. There are 15 options for students to choose from to fill in each of the 10 blanks. For questions related to phrasal verbs, the correct adverb or preposition has to be chosen from the options to match the verb in the sentence so as to suit the context of the sentence.

In this section, there are 6 grammatical errors and 6 spelling errors in a short passage for students to identify and correct. For grammatical questions related to phrasal verbs, the adverb or preposition of the phrasal verb is usually the part which needs to be identified and corrected.

This section is challenging to many students because there can be more than one answer for a blank. A student has to read widely and be proficient in both grammar and vocabulary in order to score well for this section. If phrasal verbs are tested, there can only be ONE correct answer for the blank. To score this one point, a student must be familiar with a wide range of phrasal verbs and their definitions.

Before you start to familiarise yourself with the different phrasal verbs and their meanings, you must know the types into which phrasal verbs are categorised. This will help you greatly in understanding sentence structures when phrasal verbs are used.

3. A separable phrasal verb allows an object to be placed between the words. Separable phrasal verbs are always transitive, so an object is required.

For example:

They have called off the conference.

They have called the conference off.

We have put together a comprehensive list of phrasal verbs, complete with definitions and example sentences. For more premium content on phrasal verbs, do head over to our Vocabulary online module. Self-marking quizzes are set up to provide instant results and solutions for students to learn independently in the most effective way.

I always like to start off the P6 year (which is officially November at Thinking Factory) with a review of Phrasal Verbs and Commonly misspelled words. Students are given these lists to study and be tested on. I find these lists very useful and we return to these lists throughout the year as we work on Paper 2 components such as Editing and Cloze.

Others may need to memorise their lists of phrasal verbs and continually add on to their lists if they come across a phrasal verb that they do not know while working on Paper 2 components in their P6 year.

These lists are also easy for parents to compile at home. These lists are also useful for P5 students! For the Phrasal verbs list, it will be good to have a list with 3 columns. The phrasal verb, the meaning of it and an example. Students can even create their own sentences using each phrasal verb.

The list of commonly misspelled words can be found online. Our list has almost 65 words and words are added on throughout the year if needed. If a student has a weaker grasp of spelling, then the list may be a longer one for her or him. Personally, I think that preparing lists is a great revision tool for students, especially in their important years. Below, are some words found in our Commonly misspelled word list.

A phrasal verb combines an action verb with an adverb or a preposition to create an entirely new verbal phrase. The meaning of a phrasal verb is usually unrelated to the meanings of the words that constitute it.

The Ultimate Phrasal Verbs list comprises more than 260 frequently used phrasal verbs with their definitions and usage. Some phrasal verbs may carry more than one meaning and usage! Each phrasal verb is carefully explained in a concise manner that makes it easy for pupils to understand.
