I noticed that two exits at that overpass are repaved, but in a different place. And a wild area has been destroyed to create parking for construction vehicles.

This is probably a state project, not a town project.

But it seems to proceed with little regard to the surrounding environment. To me, the destruction seems unnecessary - and typical of a project that does not have proper public review.

Does anyone have details about this project?

Andrei, this is from Town website, it’s a MassDOT project, “…This work is part of a $26.1 million project for Bridge Replacement and Related Work including Roundabout Construction Route 2A (Marrett Road) over I-95. Work is expected to be completed in late fall 2027.”

Andrei-

This MASSDot project is long overdue.  Along with the bridge replacement, both sides of the bridge will have a reconfigured traffic pattern for the on/off ramps.  So yes there will be change to the area, and yes, there is necessary destruction and reconstruction.

Looking at other MASSDot projects, they are really conscious of maintaining the wildlife areas upon conclusion of their projects.  Take a peek at any of the other reconstructed bridge work in our neighboring towns.  The end results are very good.

The details of their project are usually found on somewhere on the MASSDot website.

4 years to complete?  Rte. 2A and 128 are both state roads. I think it’s going to take four years because they don’t work on Fridays. At least they didn’t work yesterday.

All the best,

Janet

There were multiple public hearings about the project when it was initially planned over a decade ago (which I attended), and recent public hearings when the project was put back on the path for federal and state funding.  Over the years I have had a few interactions with state engineers associated with the project. The end result will significantly reduce paved area (good for the environment), reduce unnecessary road width and pull the ramps in closer to the highway, improve vehicle safety, reduce traffic noise for existing abutters and finally provide excellent pedestrian and bicycle safety.  When the Route 2A bridge was originally built, the Route 2 bridge did not exist.  For years after the building of the Route 2 bridge, Route 2A carried relatively little traffic and has for decades been oversized.  This project recognized that in its redesign.  In my view it is an exceptionally well planned project and I look forward to its completion.

Todd, I think Andrei thought "tob" meant "town office building" thinking it was from Jim Malloy.

This Federally funded bridge replacement project was originally scheduled to be re-built in 2016 under the "Accelerated Bridge Replacement Act" because it is "Functionally Obsolete". Because of a quirk in Federal Law and Regulations imposed by Federal Legislation from more rural states, MassDOT had to limit the number of bridges it could rebuild in the Greater Boston area under that program, and MassDOT postponed final design and construction of this bridge.

Federal funding is now approved for this well thought out public process designed bridge replacement. The two roundabout design at each bridge end is the model that MassDOT hopes to incorporate all along Route I-95 (Route 128). Todd Burger's email details the environmental and safety benefits of having a narrower bridge that is designed to be safer for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians, and that has less environmental impact that what is there now.

Lexington Town officials and the public have been commenting on this publicly noticed project for about ten years, and MassDOT has listened and incorporated changes based on the extensive public process.

Can someone provide a pointer to a website that would contain the final plans?
