ejabberd setup

Hi all:
I have been setting up an ejabberd server at home. To collaborate
between my XO and my emulated XO, it seems I have to use a jabber
server, as they cannot see each other "naturally." I tried to use
xochat.org, but it was crowded and I think there was a limitation
somewhere that was preventing my XOs (real and emulated) from seeing
each other reliably. Plus I just wanted to see how difficult it would
be. I followed the directions at:

but I am still having problems. I would be happy to go into those, but
I want to make sure someone is on this list who can help before I
explain this for the third time. I've already sent mail to
he...@laptop.org and posted to the community help forum. Neither
produced any response.
