The prevention part of this includes simple things.
· Lighting – make sure there is sufficient lighting outside and inside your home when you are away. Install dusk to dawn or motion lighting outside for very little cost.
· Check to see if shrubbery or other landscaping is overgrown to cover the lower part of windows where criminals can break a window or screen and crawl in without being detected
· LOCK THE DOORS & WINDOWS. When going to bed at night window must be closed & LOCKED! Criminal look for unlocked windows where they can cut a screen & lift the window to gain access. If people are outside doing yard work etc. the doors need to be locked.
· Do not leave items such as ladders, buckets, etc. in the yard where criminals can use them to gain entry to a window that otherwise would be too high off the ground.
· LOCK GARAGE DOORS including the service doors!
· When working outside close the overhead garage door. By leaving it open it is basically “advertising” what is in there or showing would-be-criminals what’s there for them to come back later and steal.
· Never leave items such as purses, laptops, wallets, or other items easy to grab and go in front of windows or doorways where criminals can reach in and grab the items without ever having to enter the home.
· If you have a security system – always use it!
Please know that we greatly appreciate the partnership with our District Councils in the Western District and any help you can provide to inform our communities!
