Goat
Yard Update: Meet us at the Goat Yard!

Every Sunday, LexFarm Goat Yard, 1 - 3 pm
On Sunday, a
new doeling, Phippen, was introduced to
our goat yard. She is visiting for about a month
while a buck visits her home barn in Belmont for
breeding. In fact, Naya and Sapphire
left on Wednesday to be bred by the the same buck.
If all goes according to plan, there will be lots
of new kids at the Goat Yard some time in April.
Thanks to Founding Member,
Mike Decoteau, for these photos of
Phippen's introduction to the Goat Yard.
Come and
meet Phippen during LexFarm
Goat Yard public visiting hours, Sundays
1 - 3 pm, volunteers and weather
permitting!
Wild
Edible Plant Series, Part Three: Chickweed
This
series will cover wild
edible plants found in
New England as told in
Russ Cohen's book,
"Wild Plants I Have
Known... and Eaten."
If you haven't had the
chance, take some time
to read this
delightfully
informative book to
find out more on wild
plants for sustainable
eating.
Note: If you are unfamiliar with
harvesting wild edibles, please
consult a plant expert before
attempting to forage on your own.
The chickweed is a common garden
weed that grow in shallow patches, preferring
cool, damp conditions. They have overlapping
smooth, pointed leaves and small flowers made up
of narrow, white petals. All parts of the plant
above ground are considered edible, both raw or
cooked. When eaten raw, the taste of the stems
resemble corn, while the leaves, when cooked,
are a close substitute to spinach. In addition
to its leaves and stems, the seeds are also
edible as well. The chickweed is also enjoyed
by birds, from which its name is derived.
Chickweed can be harvested in the spring and
fall, in addition to mild winters. When
harvesting, it is best to pick the tender, newly
grown leaves from its base stem.

In
recent news, Proposition 37, a ballot proposal
to mandate the labeling of genetically
modified foods for consumers in CA, has been
rejected by voters as a result of a $46
million dollar campaign by major food
industries and biotech companies. Read more

led to its outcome here.
