Welcome back! I hope that all of our families have had a great winter
break. I am looking forward to the coming months and am excited about
the work our staff and students will be doing.

I would like to remind our community that copies of this newsletter
and other information can be found on the Lewis Elementary web site:

In addition we have created a Google Group that can be subscribed to
to allow you to receive notices and updates from the school office via
email. Announcements and timely updates are available via this group

Lost and Found
PLEASE CHECK THE LOST AND FOUND RACK!!! Our collection of coats,
sweatshirts and jackets continues to grow. We plan to start to donate
items to Goodwill. If you child is missing items, please check the
lost and found rack in the cafeteria.
Inclement Weather & Emergency Closures
When school closure decisions are made, the district instantly
publishes the information through their web site at:
http://www.weather.pps.k12.or.us/
Television and radio stations get their information from this
service, but sometimes their broadcast of updates is delayed. If you
have internet access, the link above is the first place you should
check for weather-related closure information. The site is available
24 hours a day. This information can also be reached from our web
site, http://lewiselementary.org
Please note, that unless it is pouring down rain, we go out for recess
each day at lunch hour. Please be sure that your child is dressed
appropriately for the weather.
Lewis Kindergarten Round Up Meetings Scheduled
Lewis Elementary will hold two informational meetings for incoming
kindergarten parents on the following dates:
Friday, February 8, 2008 - 9:00 am
Wednesday, February 20, 2008 - 6:00 pm
Parents are invited to come and learn about our school and our program
offerings.
Sellwood Middle School
5th Grade Orientation
Sellwood Middle School invites 5th grade students and their parents to
attend an orientation meeting Thursday, February 7, 2008 - 6:30 - 8:00
pm. Sellwood staff will share information about their programs and
answer questions about middle school at Sellwood. For more information
please contact Sellwood Middle School at 503 916 5656.
Washable Lunch Trays
Pilot Program Volunteers Needed
Currently Portland Public Schools utilizes polystyrene foam trays for
our lunch program. Lewis staff, parents and students have voiced
concern about the environmental impact of polystyrene and have been
looking to go back to washable trays. Through the help of our PTA, we
are involved in a pilot program to use washable trays on Fridays. We
are looking for additional parent volunteers who are willing to commit
their time a day a week between 12:45 and 1:45 pm to help with this
effort.

Lewis Elementary Auction Update
"WE NEED YOUR HELP!"
The auction is right around the corner and we are in need of
procurement. Please reach out to your friends and families for what
ever it is that they are able to donate. Remember the items must be
new. Gift certificates, day classes, class projects, vacation homes,
tutoring, books, your time and/or any new items. Remember Christmas is
right behind us so this would be the perfect time to donate those
unwanted gifts. If you should choose to donate please fill out a
donation slip so that we will be able to recognize you properly.
Donation slips are located in the office. You may also contact
Stephanie Sook 971-340-8044 to make arrangements or if you have any
questions.
