Principal Notes From Mr. Lauer

Auction Coming Soon:
Your Help Is Needed, Please Help
The PTA Auction Committee has been working very hard in anticipation
of our upcoming Auction that will take place the evening of March 13,
2008 at the Laurelhurst Club. I would like to strongly encourage our
families to attend and to also please volunteer. Listed below you will
find a listing of areas where help is still needed. These types of
efforts only succeed with the help and dedication of our parent
community. To learn more about how you can help please contact our
Auction Chair, Angie Toops at 503 775 3664.
We are looking forward to a great evening and an opportunity to help
raise money that supports our Americorp position and the many
activities that the PTA supports.

Oregon Food Bank: Project Second Wind Begins Monday
Project Second Wind begins Monday, March 3, when more than 45,000 K-12
students, along with school staff, neighbors, local businesses and
service organizations will study hunger and collect food and funds in
creative ways.
During Project Second Wind, students collect food and funds at home
and in their neighborhoods and compete with other schools and
classrooms for the highest totals. For more information please see the
flyer attached to this newsletter. I would like to acknowledge the
work of our 5th grade students who are leading our effort this year.
METRO Billboard Art Contest News
Congratulations AnyutaFiona and Sophie from Mrs. Gould’s fifth grade
class. They have been selected as semi-finalists in the Metro
Billboard Art Contest. The contest invited students to submit entries
including a message about the importance of resource conservation and
recycling.

BINGO Night This Friday
I invite you to attend our PTA Bingo night taking place this Friday
evening at 6:00 pm. This is a great family event and I thank the PTA
for again offering an opportunity for families to gather in a family
atmosphere.

Grandparents/Special Friends Day Monday, March 3, 2008
This Monday we invite Grandparents and Special Friends to visit Lewis
at 1:30 pm to visit classrooms and take part in Read Across America
Day. Grandparents and Special Friends should check in near the office
and then proceed to classrooms.
School Choice Transfer Process Begins VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR
5TH GRADE STUDENTS
This process is very important for our 5th grade students who may be
considering a middle school other than their home middle school. Some
middle schools require attendance at a mandatory parent information
meeting in order to be considered for a transfer. A list of these
information meetings is available on our web site, or in the school
office.
Students who live in the Lewis attendance area are slated to
attend Sellwood Middle School. Students who have transfered to Lewis
are slated to attend their neighborhood middle school unless these
choose to go through the transfer process. The deadline for transfer
applications is Friday, March 7, 2008. More information can be found
on the PPS Enrollment and Transfer Office page at http://www.pps.k12.or.us
Note: If you would like further information or any help with the
transfer process, please contact me at 503 916 6360

IMPORTANT! Health Concern

February 25, 2008
Dear Lewis Families,

As many of you know, I have a life threatening allergy to a number of
food items and also bee/insect stings.
I am carrying a small purse which holds my EpiPen. EpiPens are
commonly carried by persons with severe allergies and a risk of
anaphylactic shock because they can be self-administered and are very
fast-acting. Another EpiPen is located in the school office.
Ingestion through breathing or eating of the following herbs will
cause a reaction which constrains my throat and causes me to stop
breathing:

cilantro, coriander, curry, parsley, lavender and rosemary

Since this is a life or death situation for me, I am asking each of
you to please not bring these items to school . In addition the scents
of strong colognes, perfumes, and cleaning supplies are also difficult
for me.
I greatly appreciate your help and support with this important
matter.

Sincerely,

Deborah Swan

Lewis Elementary Auction Update
Your Help Is Needed
We are looking forward to the auction on March 13th from 6-9 PM.  We
are so pleased with the number of donations we have received.  What we
still need to make this auction work properly are volunteers.  At this
point there are about 8 people total working on the auction and that
just isn't enough for the auction to operate as planned.

We need help with these positions:
people to help out the day and night of with setting out auction
items,
people to check in and check out,
runners to get items from table to customers bags,
clean up after the event.

Help us do the most we can for this school and it's students by
signing up on sign up sheets outside of the classrooms or contacting
Angie Toops 503.775.3664.  This auction will be great fun with
this year's theme, Mardi Gras. Each person who comes to the auction
will receive  a mask  which is included in the price of admission.
Look for auction invitations and ticket info in you child's box this
week!
