Levren --

This past Sunday, thereminists and theremin lovers came from near and far to hear a wonderful afternoon of music in the beautiful gardens and courtyard of the Caramoor estate, the summer home and cultural heart of Lucie Bigelow and Walter Rosen.  Carolina Eyck joined with players from the Music from Copland House (as in Aaron Copland) to perform Miklos Rozsa's "Spellbound Concerto for Theremin, Oboe Piano and String Orchestra" (1945) and Mohuslav Martinu's "Fantaisie for Theremin, Oboe, Piano and String Quartet" (1944) -- both commissioned by Lucie Bigelow Rosen.   Prior to that, there were two pre-concert events;  a recital by Carolina Eyck with Christopher Tarnow on piano, performing Tarnow's "Sonata No. 1 for Theremin and Piano" (2013) -- a fantastic piece, I might add -- and a fun-filled lecture/demonstration by Rob Schwimmer of a few different theremins, including Lucie Rosen's "September Theremin", the custom Lev-built younger sister to Clara Rockmore's custom Lev-built theremin (now owned by Dalit Warshaw).     It was a fantastic afternoon, and a superb opportunity to hear and see these great players...

Assuming I can now post photos on Levnet, I am pleased to share three low-res (72dpi 2M) photos I took at this event.  Please just be aware that these are copyrighted photographs and you are welcome to re-post appropriately but please include my photo credit -- © Steve J. Sherman -- each and every time.

In the first photo, during the Tarnow Concerto, Carolina was momentarily and delightfully distracted by a Monarch butterfly that flittered about and right into the performance (upper right).   In the second photo, you see the inside of the Lev-built custom "September Theremin" as it stood on stage.    In the third photo, following the concert, a wonderful cast of characters celebrates a truly great afternoon:  L to R:  Christopher Tarnow, Dalit Warshaw, Carolina Eyck, Rob Schwimmer, Olivia Mattis, Andrew Baron, Sarah Rice, Mike Buffington and Gotye (Wally De Backer).    Missing from the photo -- my father Bob Sherman, who left before we took this, and myself, who was busy taking it.  And I trust there were even more thereminists lurking about, had we only known...

Enjoy.
Steve

You captured the butterfly moment beautifully!

Thanks for including me in the group photo. It was so much fun to meet everyone in person and now be able to connect a face to the name!

I think the afternoon was a huge success on all levels.

Congratulations Carolina, Christopher and Rob!

Sarah

I was a bit concerned about my addition of a photoshopped monarch butterfly to Steve Sherman’s picture (which I posted yesterday to the OTHER levnet). The original picture is PRICELESS, especially given Clara Rockmore’s statement, “…Think of your fingers as delicate butterfly wings…”. I felt that by photoshopping a butterfly into the jpeg, no explanation of the moment was needed.

I just DID IT…totally on an impulse…I hope no one was offended……should I have asked?….oh God!…probably….hey, I even stuck a little butterfly shadow into the pic!

The moment is just awesome!

Peter, and all:
At least you were not tempted to Photoshop the head of a drooling Tyrannosaurus Rex into her line of sight. Oh, the missed opportunities!!

A little off topic but I have always been fascinated by the fact that the outer edge of the butterfly wing is actually named Termen, what are the odds of that?

I love it -- as we all know nowadays in the age of Photoshop, photographs lie and lie like hell if they want to...   If you ask me, it's more about whether or not one deliberately changes the story, and whether or not one does it well, with proper skill.  Peter, other than the fact that you used a butterfly image that was lower resolution than the host photo, I think we're ready to take our act on the road...  and your flutterby shadow is art itself.  Peter Pan would be proud!

Well, here's one for ya: Is it still a lie if it's true -- that there was a butterfly.

Was it not a Monarch, or possibly only a Viceroy (looks nearly the same)?

Depends upon who's truth we're considering...

You can't make this stuff up department:

I play theremin and sing for an Alzheimer's group in NYC about 6 times a year. Amethyste played for them with me as well, last year. They are in various stages of dementia and mental loss and the wonderful woman who runs it uses live music as a way to stimulate their brains and slow the progress of the disease.

The theremin has an interesting effect on them in a good way, because it is somewhat magical and they listen to it in a different way. I play a mixture of classical and show tunes, popular, mixed in with standards. When I was playing the classical music, one couple got up to slow dance to it. Another man who doesn't speak and sits there almost comatose, sings along note for note with the Puccini and Rachmaninoff which astounded his caretaker. Afterwards, the man thanked me with tears in his eyes for allowing him to access that music again and thereby parts of himself long dormant. It is a beautiful program. The power of music.

In order to educate the group on the theremin, the woman who runs the group has been playing youtube videos for them. Of course Peter Pringle is prominently out there on the YouTube. There is a woman there in the group named Nancy, who is in the early stages of Alzheimers and still a pretty sassy 70 year old. She always asks about Amethyste and remembers her quite fondly. Nancy always asks me to play Phantom of the Opera for her, especially Music of the Night.

Anyway... Nancy has fallen in love with... Peter Pringle, especially videos from his young French-Canadian love song days. She is convinced that she will go and love him into being a sweet person. I told her that is probably not going to happen, but that I would pass along a painting she did of Peter playing the theremin, to him.

I pass along her painting, Peter, as promised, without the slightest irony. This is a gift of real love and admiration from Nancy to you.

That is precious Sarah. But Peter being loved into a sweet person? Obviously signs of dementia.  ;)

WHAT A HOOT!

The therapeutic effect of music on people at all stages of Alzheimer’s disease is well recognized. Here is an article on the subject published by the ALZHEIMER’S FOUNDATION OF AMERICA that I found very interesting.

http://www.alzfdn.org/EducationandCare/musictherapy.html

While I am flattered that Nancy has fallen in love with me, and I’m crazy about the portrait, I’m afraid she’s going to have to line up behind a small collection of other “mentally compromised”, obsessed female stalkers and assorted crazies, all of whom are convinced that we are destined to be together.

I am curious about one thing. Nancy seems to think she will be able to “love me into being a sweet person”.

I wonder who gave her the idea that I was not already sweet & lovable? Given that the woman is institutionalized, fragile, and in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, it seems like a rather nasty, mean-spirited thing to have said about a person she does not know, whom she obviously idolizes, and whose music seems to give her joy.

"I am curious about one thing. Nancy seeam curious about one thing. Nancy seems to think she will be able to “love me into being a sweet person”

It's downright aggressive and presumptuous.

Spiritually compromised, I say.

The irony is that on many occasions Sarah Rice has quoted everyone, from Sufi masters to Julie Harris, on the need to carefully weigh one’s words before speaking so they reflect only kindness, goodness and love.

Nancy’s gift was indeed one of “real love and admiration”.

Sarah’s was a poisoned apple.

It was more about her wanting to come to where you live, to convince you to sweetly love her.

I told her I didn't think that would happen, you were pretty prickly. Don't worry, I kept it vague and kind.

And she didn't care, she knows that her love would make you sweet.

Don't make chicken sheiss out of chicken salad.

Should I tell her you thought it was a hoot?

When I tell her your reply,  I will leave out the part where you said:

other “mentally compromised”, obsessed female stalkers and assorted crazies

You're welcome.

"Peter Prickle"?  I can totally see that for Peter's next Noel Coward tribute album... ;-)
