Robert Peel was a genius!
His accomplishments at Harvard are, to this day,
unequalled by anything since written. However, he was a past
master at "historical revisionism." Here is one example
of how his proclivity in that direction gave rise to
the release of what had been highly suppressed
derogatory information about Mary Baker Eddy.

When preparing to write his "Trilogy," Bob Peel was told to
‘create’ a Mary Baker Eddy who would meet with the
approval of the General Counsel of the National Council of
Churches. Very few Christian Scientists know anything about
"The Williamsburg Charter," however, it constitutes a
milestone in the history of the destruction and
deterioration of the Cause of Christian Science. It was a
meeting of all the heads of the Nation’s religious
denominations, and for the first time, representatives of the
Christian Science Board of Directors in Boston were invited
to attend.

At the conclusion of the weeklong
conclave, which was held in Williamsburg, Virginia, the
Christian Scientists were summoned into private session
with several of the highest officials and
administrators of the National Council of Churches. In this
closed, private meeting, the Christian Scientists were
told that they would be extended full fellowship and
membership in the National Council of Churches if they met
merely two requirements which, if satisfactorily met,
would qualify the Christian Science Church for
membership.

The first requirement was to begin immediately to
refrain from referring to Mary Baker Eddy as the "Leader"
of Christian Science. The Scientists were told there
is only room for one "Leader" in
Christianity, and that, Christ Jesus! One Council
member did, however, recommend that the Scientists begin
to replace the word, "Leader," with the term,
"Reformer." Seems there is plenty of room in Christianity for
many reformers, but only room enough for one "Leader!"

The second requirement that needed to be met
concerned our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the
Scriptures." The Council admonished the Christian Scientists
of the absolute need to cease and desist,
immediately, referring to the textbook as being a divinely
inspired book! No longer is it to be identified as
containing a direct revelation from divinity to humanity,
inscribed by Mary Baker Eddy, and identified as being equal
to the Holy Bible! Rather, it is to be presented to
the world as a compilation, or concordance, of Mary
Baker Eddy’s notes reflecting her private study and
research of the Bible!

The Christian Scientists went back to Boston and in their first
Board meeting after returning they initiated two very serious and
important projects. First, they appropriated the money to
produce a film that they intended and designed to present
a "new" Mary Baker Eddy to the world –– a Mary
Baker Eddy who was one of Christianity’s foremost
"reformers." The name of the film was: "Mary Baker Eddy –– A
Heart In Protest!" The entire theme of the movie was to
depict Mrs. Eddy as being foremost amongst all of
Christianity’s great ‘reformers.’ A copy of the finished product
was sent to each of the Executive Members of the
Board of Directors of the National Council of
Churches!

The second project was to begin immediately to design
a ‘new’ textbook, the upshot of that being what
we now know of as being the "trade edition." What
resulted was the ‘trading in’ of a close replication of
Mrs. Eddy’s divinely inspired Textbook, in exchange
for a complete and total abortion that took on all
the appearances of a circus side show! A ‘new’
"Prologue" was written and copyrighted and placed before the
"Preface" of the textbook, and a topical "Index" was
prepared, and copyrighted, and placed after the Chapter,
"Fruitage" –– thereby giving the false impression that
everything in between was copyrighted and owned by the
Christian Science Board of Directors!

Concurrent with the appearance of this gaudy and garish looking
book in book stores, Church officials sponsored
promotional meetings in book-stores that were designed to
stimulate the sale of the textbook! It was during these
promotions that the textbook was identified as being a
"non-denominational" text that speaks to all of the "New Age" issues
that currently generate a great deal of public
interest and response.

Church officials made and continue to make a Herculean effort to
build
bridges between the ‘new’ brand of Christian Science being
espoused by the Boston Church, and all of the Mind/Body,
Alternative Medicine Schools which currently proliferate
throughout the medical venue. Today, the public at large
thinks of the textbook as being just another in the
hundreds of "self-help" library of secularly humanistic
approaches to life and all of the problems that are
associated therewith!

Bob Peel desperately needed a
‘citable,’ ‘reliable,’ and ‘authorized’ piece of literature
that he could use to enable him to drop a bomb on the
Cause of Christian Science. A literary scholar from
Berkeley, California, was summoned to Boston and given free
access to information that had been hidden in the Church
Archives for nearly a century. The data concerned several
times at the end of Mrs. Eddy’s long life when she
found it necessary to receive an injection of morphine
to alleviate the pain she was being made to endure
due to a condition of kidney stones. No one had ever
known anything about this, as the information had been
assiduously concealed for a century, and never did it see the
light of day.

However, inasmuch as Robert Peel
was under orders to depict Mrs. Eddy as a frail,
irrational, and hypocritical disciple of her own Revelation,
it behooved the adversary to allow the information
about the morphine injections to become widely known in
the attempt to demean and discredit Mrs. Eddy!

Consequently, when the Berkeley scholar finished his Doctoral
dissertation wherein he disclosed, for the first time, that
Mrs. Eddy had resorted to the use of morphine, the
Church approached University Press at Berkeley, and
offered to pay for an enormous number of the
dissertations to be printed in hardback editions. When they hit
the street, they carried the name: "Christian
Science, Its Encounter With American Religious Life." At
last, Peel had an authentic literary work to cite as
evidentiary proof that Mrs. Eddy had been unfaithful to her
teachings, and disobedient to God!

This is how "historical revisionists" CREATE the necessary
information they need in order to mold society to either make or
break whatever it is they are assigned to addressing!

Let it be thoroughly understood that Mrs. Eddy’s
infrequent use of morphine was not and is not a treatment
for kidney stones! It was her inordinately unbearable pain that
was being alleviated by the morphine, thereby enabling her to regain
her mental composure and treat herself for the remediation of the
kidney stone problem!

The Church officials were/are delighted!
At last, they have a Mary Baker Eddy whom they can
hold up to the public as being merely a white haired
old lady who had to be circumvented and disobeyed
whenever the occasion justified doing so!

This is just one example of dozens I could present which
expose Robert Peel as being the past master of
‘historical revisionism’ I, and others, knew him to
be!

Macy, would you be so kind as to type [in full] and
post Mr. Peel’s 1990 letter, a copy of which you say
is in your possession? After disclosing that which I
have just now posted, it would be very beneficial for
the readership of this Club’s Board to actually see
what Mr. Peel had to say about those who twisted his
arm to write about our beloved Mary Baker Eddy in the
manner now appearing in his infamous, "Trilogy."
