I've mentioned it a bunch of times, so here's the email to start planning.  I want to ride Monarch Crest before I leave Colorado.  The best weekend for me to do this is Jul 13-15.  I plan to leave Fort Collins on the afternoon of July 13, camp somewhere near Salida or Poncha Springs for two nights, probably a commercial campground to make sure there's a shower.

High Valley bikes offers a shuttle service up to Monarch Pass for $20.  Unless we end up with a large group and enough large vehicles to do the shuttle ourselves, I figure we'll use the shuttle service.  They go up 8:00 and 10:00 am.  They'll do an additional early run at 7:00 for a group of at least 5 people.

I figure we'll do the ride on Saturday unless the weather forecast looks horrible (high chance of t-storms early), then maybe we'll try it on Sunday instead.  And I figure we can ride some of those Salida trails I keep hearing about on Sunday before leaving for home.

I'd like to make reservations for the shuttle and campground.  So if you're interested in joining me for this trip let me know by the end of this week if you can.

Thanks!

Ah nuts, that is the weekend of the Double-Triple.    Are you guys doing any rides before then?   I have the Sunrise Century this weekend but those are the only organized rides I am signed up for.

Hi Mark,

I am tentatively IN. I checked w/Kat and just need to double-check the hard-copy calendar hanging in my kitchen.  :-)

I've wanted to do this ride for a long time.

For those who've ridden Monarch Crest before -- do you think a hard tail 29er would be a good weapon or am I better off riding my 26er FS bike?

Mike,

I was younger when I used to ride it (it has been over ten years since I rode it last), but 6 of the 7 times I have ridden it were all on full rigid 26'ers and I survived.  I don't remember a bunch of technical and rocky terrain.  While I'm sure it is doable on SS, if you do take the 29'er, you might consider gears.  It is not all downhill.

I'm interested in this too.  A little far out for me to commit just yet, but this one has been on my list.

Very likely I am in, too. Annemarie cannot make it, but graciously granted me a kitchen pass.

Hey, I cannot believe Mark actually posted an invite to a SHUTTLE weekend. Now, finally seeing the light, growing up, becoming sensible, ... he moves away.

Hey wait a minute...we can probably pedal up to the pass, huh? We don't need no stinking shuttle! :)

I was thinking Mark is trying to get all his do-it-once-before-I-leave-Colorado' things done and shuttling it one of those.

Hey, maybe we should ride up and shuttle down.  Maybe we could get a discount since I bet they typically go back down empty.  :-)

This is halfway to one of the other things I want to do (again) this summer:  Crested Butte.  Specifically two rides:  1) 401  2) Reno/Flag/Bear/Deadman.  Stick the following Monday and Tuesday at the end of this, and you've driven a majority of the drive going to Monarch Pass.

(of course, this makes three pretty stout rides back to back to back.  I haven't done Monarch Crest before -- I know it's long.  401 is a dirt road climb, awesome bombing buffed decent followed by quite a few miles of XC.  Reno/Flag/Bear/Deadman is a 30 mile epic featuring a massive service road climb and two pretty stout singletrack climbs.  So, we might want to try to find a way to sneak a rest day in there -- please don't laugh at me)

Hi all,

I'm feeling the need for some details around the Monarch Crest trip.

I think the people going are Mark, Mike W., Mike G., Klaus (at this point in the list I wonder about my sanity in going), Wade and Hal.

The proposal was to leave on Friday.  My proposal - 1:00 pm.

Does anyone have an idea where to stay on Friday and Saturday nights?  I have not looked into this at all.  I will offer to do Dutch oven lasagna on Friday night if the group would like.

Mark had mentioned that High Valley bikes offers a shuttle service up to Monarch Pass for $20.  Should we plan on that and make the arrangements?  I for one would rather not pedal up to the pass.  Yes, I'm a wussy and freely admit it.

At least Wade and I are going on to Crested Butte to ride Monday and Tuesday.  So I think it is likely that either Wade or I will be driving unless there are others that would care to join us.  We're tentatively planning on staying at the hostel in Crested Butte although we haven't made reservations yet.

I was supposed to look into campgrounds, but I have not.  Is everybody ok with camping?  If so, I'll find a spot and make reservation for a big site or two sites.  Dutch oven lasagna on Friday sounds great, but can you do that with the fire ban?  If not, I have a two-burner propane stove, and I recall Mike G. having a huge stove, we could use to cook something else.  Or we can just eat out.

Breakfast Saturday before the big ride--I think we should just eat something quick at camp and get out early.  Dinner saturday can either be out a restaurant or we can cook at camp (again, depending on fire ban).

Despite my joking, I want to use the shuttle.  I'll have a map and my gps.

Not sure I can leave by 1pm on Friday, but maybe.  Certainly by 2:00 or 2:30.  I would LOVE to ride Crested Butte, but being a newb at my job, I have no vacation time :(

I can drive but am also happy to be a gas-buying passenger.

I've camped here before, but you'll need reservations.

As for crested butte, I've stayed at the cement creek campground with
the bears. It's somewhat secluded, but is a few miles out of town.

Good luck on this ride folks.   I will be starting out Saturday morning at about 3:30 AM for Evergreen to ride the Double Triple.  Mark, since this is one of your final trips in Colorado, I hope it is one of the best!   Take care folks and have lots of fun.

Mark is right so in light of the fire ban I will rescind my offer for lasagna . (How could I be so forgetful after having seen the burn on the Timber trail?)  Looks like we have gas stoves or eating out as some possible options.

I made camping and shuttle reservations for 6 (Mike W, Mike G., Klaus, Hal, Wade, and me). If anybody else wants to come, let me know so I can add to the reservation, or if you need to cancel let me know.

Camping - I reserved a large meadow site at Chalk Creek Campground.  http://www.chalkcreek-campground.com/index.htm  We have site T8, which she said is easily large enough for multiple tents.  It's 17 mi from Poncha Springs, where we'll catch the shuttle to Monarch Pass.  It's about 8 mi to Buena Vista and 17 mi to Salida, where I figure we can get dinner etc.

I made reservations for the High Valley Bikes shuttle for Saturday at 8am.  We need to be there at 7:30.

Mike G - can you bring your big tent?  I'll bring a 3 man tent too in case we need it.

As for meals, what do you guys prefer, cook at a camp or eat out?  There is a fire ban so we'd have to cook using stoves.  I'm fine with either.  I think breakfast Saturday will need to be quick--either cold snacks or fast food take out.  Dinners can be at restaurants or cooked at camp.  And breakfast sunday can be either.  I have a two burner propane stove, coffee pot etc.

Looking forward to this!

mark

Thanks for doing this Mark, looking forward to it.

Anyone else interesting in the CB portion of this, try to let me know by around lunch time-ish tomorrow and I will call the hostel.  You can pay to just use the showers there too, so camping is also an alternative option.

Mark,

thanks for organizing this trip. Just got my kitchen pass confirmed (again) :-)

Let's minimize cars: We can use my truck as a gear hauler. But I can also ride with somebody else.

Eating out is fine by me. But of course we can also get pasta boilling... We need the stoves either way for morning coffee.

Thanks again for organizing - and for securing the campground and shuttle.

Klaus

PS: Cannot do CB. Need to be back at work.
