This race weekend was a mixed bag of results: Annemarie won the CAT2 Ladies DH race bringing down a solid run. I came in 8th in CAT2 Men 40+ simply lacking physical and mental strength to go faster. Yes, I did do XC again. And this time CAT3 XC was a real contest between three riders (and then the pack).
Unlike the last race I was able to keep track of my competitors. That was easy. 2 were climbing in front of me and the rest didn’t count. Red shirt was 150 yards ahead, blue shirt was right in front of me in the first brutal fire road climb. I tried – but I couldn’t get ahead of blue. So we entered the single track in the described order. About half way up blue shirt was worn out. I suggested to lead him a bit, he accepted but couldn’t follow as I slowly closed the gap to red shirt. Finally on his tail, red shirt started to weave and then road off the trail. I tried to ride tactical from there on. Meaning, I wanted to slow down. But red shirt wouldn’t let me. He latched on and so I kept pedaling close to suffering a heart attack. Later, he told me that he knew I would drop him on the descent so he wanted to stay in front on the climb. Well, his plan didn’t work. But his prediction was straight on. The trail dipped and I was alone.
