Hi,

We are using LPD/LPP on tablets for printing on (network) HPLJ printers.
With different configurations we've got different issues:
- If PDF Rendering on tablets is checked:
It takes a very long time, but the app prints correctly (3:30 min for 8 pages, almost text only)
- If PDF Rendering is unchecked:
Printing starts almost immediately, which is great, but it causes printer crashes randomly. Majority of time, it prints the first 2 pages, then the printer crashes (memory error) and restarts. But sometimes it prints the (same) 8 pages and crashes in the next run.
We tried different configurations in the app with no improvements.

Do you have any advice how to solve this?

Thank you!

For the slow printing issue using on device PDF Rendering; often there is little that can be done other than upgrading to a bigger and better tablet. Sometimes changing the PDL will speed things up. On device PDF rendering is very slow because of the large amount of memory that is used to 1) turn the PDF pages into bitmaps , 2) turn the bitmaps into PDL streams, 3) send PDL stream over Wifi. (This is the reason most printer vendors use Cloud Printing.)

When you turn off PDF Rendering you are simply forwarding the PDF file directly to the printer and forcing it to do all the work. It sounds like the printer is also running out of memory. I would investigate the possibility of a firmware upgrade for your model of printer which could fix any PDF printing issues.

Also have you tried different PDF files? Sometimes there are newer features embedded into the PDF which older print drivers cannot decipher.

As a last resort you may want to investigate using a raspberry pi as a print server which may solve all your issues.

GoodLuck,
