My computer has stopped working because the hard disk has broken. I used it to store important data without having a backup, and several files (.xslx, .word, .pdf) could not be recovered or they are corrupt when we use a program to access it. Is there any other way to try to recover them?

Many failed DIY attempts may hamper recovery and add to the price. This is true if the data loss has a physical cause and if in-place repairs are attempted (partition table editing, rebuild RAID etc.).

If raw values are non zero the drive had, at some point, problems reading sectors. Large values IMO (say > 20) are alarming even if the SMART tools says they are not. An easy to use and free SMART tool is CrystalDiskInfo. In menu Function > Advanced Feature > set RAW values to 10 [DEC]. Most of the file recovery tools I'll recommend later on also can display SMART data.

It is true that SSD's are less prone to mechanical damage of moving parts. Still, sudden disappearance of data can have physical causes such as sudden loss of power. SSD's can and do suddenly fail just like conventional hard drives.

For example Windows sends a TRIM command when you format a partition or as soon as you delete a file - if it concerns a NTFS formatted volume. So, in general data recovery from a formatted partition is impossible unless: 'circumstances' (non 'supported' file system, older USB bridge not relaying TRIM commands, etc.).

TRIM =/= erasure, or zero-fill although it may appear that way. In short: Many controllers 'unmap' trimmed LBA addresses. Try reading such LBA addresses and the controller simply returns zeros without even ever reading the drive. A data recovery lab may be able to recover 'trimmed' data while a data recovery lab can not recover data that was truly overwritten, even if only overwritten with zeros.

Can be used to make some in place repairs where it concerns MBR, partition tables and boot sectors. These are a tiny fraction of all things that can be wrong and prevent access to your data, and in general it's a bad idea to make in-place repairs. That said, for a knowledgeable person patching a disk can be the quickest way to recovery with only marginal risks.

Also reason for data loss plays a role: If the known cause is accidental partition deletion, and the layout of the disk is known, picking the correct partitions isn't rocket science and fairly low risk IMO. If on the other hand cause for the data loss is unknown it makes no sense to try TestDisk just for the sake of it.

Download and install Disk Drill for Windows. Do not use the disk that experienced that data loss for the download to avoid overwriting files you wish to restore. Use a USB drive for the download and install if your main hard drive has lost data. You will need to provide Administrators credentials during the install process.

Connect an external storage media and launch the program. The application presents you with a list of disks that the software has discovered and are available for use. Select the one that you will use for recovery.

Recovered files are filtered and displayed in folders to make it easier to find exactly what you need. Select from these categories when searching for data: Pictures, Video, Audio, Documents, Archives, and other files. This feature saves a lot of time, allowing you to focus on the recovery results that matter to you without needing to go through the whole recovery report.

Reconstructed files are those that have been recovered by Disk Drill but have not provided enough metadata to obtain a filename. The files are reconstructed through deep scans based on their file signatures, and will usually have a valid file extension displayed. You can preview the files to see if you want to recover them and then rename them when recovery is complete.

Disk Drill does not only offer data recovery but includes a free data protection tool that helps keep your important files and folders safe. Recovery Vault acts as an extension to your Recycle Bin and allows you to recover designated files that are deleted without performing a full recovery. It supports hard drives running the FAT32, NTFS, and HFS+ file systems with no overhead. When a file goes missing, simply use the Undelete Protected Data feature to get it back fast.

TestDisk is a powerful open-source data recovery software that can fix partition tables to recover lost partitions. While it doesn't have a graphical user interface, the steps you need to follow in order to fix logical disk errors and recover your data are fairly straightforward:

Disk Drill can recover data from virtually any hard disk brand. This includes providing support for drives manufactured by Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba, Hitachi, Kingston Technology, Samsung, and Iomega. If your storage device is disk-based, then there is an excellent chance that Disk Drill supports it and can be used to successfully recover and data that is accidentally lost.

Yes, you can. Disk Drill for Windows enables users to recover up to 500 MB of data using the free trial version of the application. Give the tool a test drive and perform data recovery to evaluate its functionality. See how the combination of powerful technology and an intuitive user interface makes it easy for anyone to restore deleted data from a hdd.

Yes, you can recover files from a failed hard drive. Your operating system needs to be able to recognize and access the device for software to work. The software needs to be able to scan the disk to perform its recovery functions. If this is not the case, your best bet is to use a data recovery center that can physically recover your data.

Cleverfiles Data Recovery Center is the best data recovery service and is within reach of everyone with a simple phone call or email. All recovery services require you to ship your device, so their physical location is somewhat irrelevant. Cleverfiles offers customers reliable recovery services with no charge for unsuccessful recoveries. A free cost estimate is available through their website.

Disk Drill can recover data from password-protected devices but won't circumvent their protection. Thus, it will ask you to provide the password for "unlocking" the device to enable it to access the data stored there and attempt recovery.

How do you determine the cost of the recovery?
The final cost of the recovery is determined by the complexity and completeness of the recovery, based on the complexity of the mechanical and/or logical issues, the quality of the recovered data, the quality of file names, and data structure. The final cost will never exceed the initial quote that you received when you first call DriveSavers. We call that our maximum price gap guarantee.

How do I pay you, when do you need my payment information?
Payment is collected when the recovery is complete, before shipping or pickup. You do not need to provide payment to start the data recovery process. DriveSavers accepts all major credit cards. Purchase orders and NET terms can be provided for Fortune 500 companies and government institutions.
