MediaProduction is one of the Skills a Sim can learn, and it was introduced in the Get Famous Expansion Pack. Like with all skills, Media Production can be learned via reading a skill book but will gain much faster when trained with the object it's associated with. Because both music making and video making share the same skill, it's easily feasible for a Sim to make a good living just doing one or both without having to work at a conventional job.
No conventional career uses the Media Production skill. However, a Sim can easily make a lot of Simoleans with a non-conventional job by making and uploading videos, music, or both. To get started, you'll need to enter Build Mode and purchase one of the media productions stations. The "Mix Master Music Station" can be found under Electronics > Audio, and the "More Choices Video Station" and "More Views Video Station" can be found under Electronics > Misc. Note that the only difference between the two video stations is that the latter ("More Views") comes with a chair, but the chair can be deleted and replaced with any dining or office chair.
All three stations are around 1500 so it may be a little tough for a newly made Sim to get one unless their house is fairly trimmed down. However, the profit potential is pretty high, almost on-par with high-level creative works with Painting and Writing.
Once the track is to your satisfaction, interact with the station again and choose "Burn Track." You'll be able to name it and add a description, then it will appear in your Sim's inventory. From there, you can select the track and release it.
The act of releasing the track will be enough to get it "out there," which will gain Fame points (if being a celebrity is enabled) and possibly a very small amount of royalties for radio play. "Radio play" is not an imaginary status either; if your Sim has a radio on in the house, the track may play regardless of what station you're listening too and the Sim will gain a special moodlet buff from hearing their own track.
From the inventory, you can also send a copy of the track to a label. If it's your first time, you're functionally guaranteed to be signed. At that point, you'll need to make a track at least once every three days and send them a copy. Fail to do this and the label will drop you, although you can reapply. Sending music to labels will net more royalties and more Fame points, and it's quick enough that it can serve as a side job to a conventional career. As the Sim's Media Production level goes up, more tracks and options will become available from the Mix Master Music Station.
After recording a video, a copy of it will appear within the desk itself rather than on the Sim's inventory. Interact with the desk and choose the "View Video Inventory" interaction to see what you have.
You can click a video from there and immediately upload it, but it's better to make it look as good as you can before doing so. At first the only option you can do is "Edit Video," but as the Media Production skill levels up you'll have access to adding transitions or other special effects. It's best to do everything you can to a video before uploading it: though you can only use "Edit Video" once, "Add Transitions" once, and "Add Effects" once, you can do all three to a single video before uploading it.
There is no "label" for videos, but Sims who regularly upload videos may be contacted by companies to make and upload specific videos for bonus cash. Also, unlike the Mix Master Music Station, the video stations can be upgraded both by gear and by Handiness projects to increase the value of any video uploaded.
