Moving to Paris

Hi everyone,

My name is Vlad and I plan to move into Paris in a few weeks. Some info about me:

I'm a Software Engineer working in the area of Virtual Reality. In Paris, I would be joining http://video-stitch.com.

Also, I'm an organizer of LessWrong mastermind group, focused on more practical aspects of rationality (http://lesswrong.com/r/discussion/lw/mx1/proposal_for_increasing_instrumental_rationality/ by the way - you are welcome to join!)

I would be glad to get in touch with local LessWrong people, so ping me if you want to meet.

I see there is not much activity here recently. I wonder - why? And what do you think about organizing Meetup at the end of the December/beginning of the January?

I also would be glad for any advice regarding moving in. Especially, as I can see the apartment rent is a quite a challenge in Paris. So If you have any advice on strategy of finding and renting good apartment (or if you have happen to have apartment to rent) - please ping me :) (My current approach is to find apartment via AirB&B for a first few month and then after coming to Paris - go through pap.fr and offline listings. Any advice on improving this strategy is welcome :).

Nice to meet you, Vlad! I I think pap.fr and similar sites are your best bet. I currently spend about half my year in Paris, so let me know when you arrive and if I'm there we can meet.

Whoops, I marked one of your mails as "not spam" but then saw you'd sent it twice ...

So yeah, a meetup in late December / early January would be nice! Looking forwards to meeting you, and I don't have any better suggestions for appartments than pap or airb&b ...

Besides pap, I might add seloger. The adverts there are by agencies, which have some fees, but in comparison with other markets, they are not excessive )on the order of half a month’s rent).

Thomas, Nice to meet you too, I reasonably sure that I would be arriving in Paris at 29.12. Would be glad to meet you!

Emile, I've posted it initially as "Post" at groups.google.com, but I didn't see any visible consequences of that posting, so I thought there might be some error and sent it as a letter to the group address, that's probably why there is two of them.

As I arrive a bit later than I thought (29.12) early January is my preference :).

Manuel, do you know how fresh/relevant is information on the advertisements there (what I mean - do they delete info about apartment when it becomes unavailable or if they just post them there and they are left there until they expire)?

My impression was that they’re usually not too quick with deleting, so responding to ads that are older than a handful of days is probably a waste of time. However, you will find so many that you’ll be overwhelmed anyway if you extend your search range.
