Thestandard Magstripe comes in two options - one with a Lighting Connector and the other with a headset jack - neither will work with your new phone. There is an adapter you can get that is USB-C to Headset Jack - see this info.

And there's Square Reader for contactless and chip payments which connects via Bluetooth. This is a great option and seems to be the most dependable of all your options - just ensure that you keep it charged before using. At least that has been my experience. Others here may have some additional thoughts to share.

On a side note: Both Tap to Pay and the Square Reader for contactless and chip are more secure and reduces your liability of credit card acceptance. Some back the Card Companies shifted card liability to the seller when cards are swiped - just something to consider.

I have the headset jack that Msbyenter linked, and it does not work with Square and my iPhone 15 Pro. I am only able to do Tap to Pay and manually enter the card number (which costs more). Hopefully my late response will save someone else the time it took me for troubleshooting...

Users of Square must agree to terms and conditions which, though overwhelmingly geared toward business use cases and is even called a Merchant Agreement, don't appear to expressly prohibit personal use. In fact, there are articles that seem to encourage the use "just because you want to accept credit cards":

These don't convince me. Taken in context, they're not Square policy, but part "gee this is neat" and part "imagine if you could do this." The website does not call out any of these use cases. They're all business cases.

It truly would be a game-changer if any Joe Schmo could accept credit cards for virtually anything they wanted to sell, but I don't think we're quite there yet. I sense that the person accepting payments through Square must be associated with a business entity.

Just please note that it is against our Terms of Service to process prepaid cards, gift cards or your own credit card using your own Square account. Additionally, you may not use Square as a money transfer system. For every payment processed through Square, you must provide a legitimate good or service.

My husband used this device at work in an organization/club that collects dues for fundraisers. The fundraisers are only for the club. So I think that is not business at all. They have no business tax id#, etc? and they use it for personal reasons when collecting money via Cc#'s if this helps you.

I used square in the past for personal yard sale and they did not transfer balance to my bank acct because they told me it was against their policy and I had to have a business license that they could either refund the credit cards i process or keep the money. So they kept it I never got it back. I don't recommend anybody to use square.

My knowledge of this kind of stuff is very poor. I have a basic little Credit Card Reader that plugs into my computer via USB. I am wanting to be able to swipe a credit card and have my website parse the information into the form fields that are above.

I have added an onclick=readCard(); event to a link below my form and when that is pushed java script is initiated to put focus on the Swiped Information field which will store the string of data from the magnetic stripe reader.

My thoughts would be that the employee would hit "Swipe Credit Card" which would make the Swiped Card Information field have focus and would fill that field with the string, then the javascript would break that information up into pieces and fill the form accordingly.

As per the comments below, I have added an example of the data sent from my card reader to the computer. I went in and replaced every number in the string with randomly typed fake numbers and replaced my name with a fake one. (Sorry scammers!)

There are two (sometimes 3) tracks of data, they are separated with ?. The expiry date is duplicated on the first track and the second track. If you want to read enough data to charge a credit card you can ignore the Track 2 data (everything from the ; onwards).

This is not a credit card or gift card that is usable anywhere else other than at these terminals, or via a website/application. The credit on the card is not standard currency - it is a custom credit.

Thanks for the replies. I am looking for a web based system that pretty much does that: tracks credits awarded to various cards and subtracts those credits when certain actions are taken, etc. But, it is not currency, just an awards balance. It may not be used at any other financial institution of any sort, it is purely for proprietary use only.

Start checking local retailer loyalty programs. Look at the fine print in there ToS to see who runs some of them. (I.e. CVS, GiantEagle, etc, all use loyalty cards with a point system, some of them use a 3rd party to run that program, so it should be doable to have a 3rd party create the cards, create the database, and track the points)

We are working on a new system. It will most likely be a custom database and web application. The core functionality of the system is not this POS piece. On top of the system, we will have credits that individual users will earn, that will go towards their cards that they receive. With these cards, they can redeem (at remote locations) certain products. Swiping the card initiates the redemption process, limited by the amount of credit they have on their card. They will redeem, and their account in our system will be updated.

Valutec has gift and loyalty card products designed just for you may have more of what you are looking for then, They list compatible POS systems that their database can use, plus they are able to print the cards.
