Roy Lincoln is originally a scientist working with his father on a special explosive chemical called "27-QRX".[4] When Nazi spies invade his lab and kill his father, he ingests the chemical to prevent it from falling into their hands. As a result, Lincoln gains the ability to cause explosions in any object he came into contact with, particularly through his hands; the only way to control it is to always wear special asbestos gloves (which were subsequently retconned into "Fibro-wax" gloves after the human health hazards of asbestos were discovered). Donning a containment suit to prevent any accidental explosions, Lincoln becomes the "Human Bomb", removing his gloves only to expose his explosive powers against Nazi and Japanese enemies, as well as ordinary criminals.[5] He also fights the invisible Mr. Chameleon, the pied piper of destruction Herman Stingmayer, and Yarboe, who has the Human Bomb's explosive ability.[6]

Crisis Aftermath: The Battle For Blüdhaven #1, introduces a character named Andy Franklin, a former scientist caught in the blast that destroyed Blüdhaven who had been held as an experiment in the secret internment camps within the shattered city.[14] He is referred to in the story as "some kind of human bomb".[15] With issue #2, he becomes the new Human Bomb, first displaying his powers in Blüdhaven #3 when he plucks off a piece of his fingernail, flicks it, and kills an oncoming troop of Atomic Knights in the resulting explosion. He is a lifelong fan of Green Lantern, even refusing to attack him during the Battle For Blüdhaven series. In Uncle Sam & the Freedom Fighters #2, Uncle Sam remarks that a drop of Franklin's sweat would be sufficient to level Manhattan. Andy is highly emotional, and is hurt deeply because his teammates refer to him as a freak because of his destructive powers.[16] He has a higher sense of morality than his teammates, but has shown that he will use lethal force when he sees his friends hurt. Andy seems to be more powerful than his predecessors, as seen in Uncle Sam and The Freedom Fighters #2, when he created a concussive blast just by slamming his gloved fists together. Andy's condition requires him to take special medication developed by SHADE, otherwise he will involuntarily explode.[17]

In 2011, "The New 52" rebooted the DC universe. A 4-issue mini-series helmed by Battle for Bludhaven creators Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti introduces a new Human Bomb. Michael Taylor is an ex-Marine and veteran who uncovers a plot to use "human bombs" to destroy the United States.[18]

Tendons are often injured and heal poorly. Whether this is caused by a slow tissue turnover is unknown, since existing data provide diverging estimates of tendon protein half-life that range from 2 mo to 200 yr. With the purpose of determining life-long turnover of human tendon tissue, we used the (14)C bomb-pulse method. This method takes advantage of the dramatic increase in atmospheric levels of (14)C, produced by nuclear bomb tests in 1955-1963, which is reflected in all living organisms. Levels of (14)C were measured in 28 forensic samples of Achilles tendon core and 4 skeletal muscle samples (donor birth years 1945-1983) with accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and compared to known atmospheric levels to estimate tissue turnover. We found that Achilles tendon tissue retained levels of (14)C corresponding to atmospheric levels several decades before tissue sampling, demonstrating a very limited tissue turnover. The tendon concentrations of (14)C approximately reflected the atmospheric levels present during the first 17 yr of life, indicating that the tendon core is formed during height growth and is essentially not renewed thereafter. In contrast, (14)C levels in muscle indicated continuous turnover. Our observation provides a fundamental premise for understanding tendon function and pathology, and likely explains the poor regenerative capacity of tendon tissue.

In any case, Butler might have a plan but the Man of Steel ispretty quick in the brain department too and quickly hatches hisown scheme to counter the cocky criminal. Telling the human bombthat it makers him nervous to see Lois in such predicament ("Itmakes you nervous!" she responds incredulously) he goes backinto the office where he promises to stay visible to Butler. Bythis time the cops have shown up led by Inspector Hill (MarshallReed, an actor I most remember for his regular appearances in the1950s cop show The Lineup (aka: San Francisco Beat). Thiswas a one shot deal for Hill. Apparently Inspector Henderson wasoff on another assignment that day (although most Superman fansare now aware that actor Robert Shayne was at the point of thisshooting having troubles with the government during the Hollywoodwitch hunts of that period, the details are a bit sketchy).Superman switches places with the policeman so that only a shadowcan be seen, records his own voice on a tape recorder ("Nocomment until the time limit is up") and exits to round upthe Museum thieves (note Reeve's priceless double-take as hepicks up the one petite cook and carries him away). The problemis that Lois is still out on that ledge with the wacko. Jimmydecides to do something about this after first calling hisgirlfriend Miriam in case a final good-bye is necessary. Itisn't, of course. The Cub reporter does show a lot of guts bygoing out on the ledge and confronting Butler with the truth ofthe ruse. But after the infuriated criminal takes the handcuffsoff Lois and she is free to get back into the Daily Planet, Jim,with golf club in hand ups the ante too much and gets into aphysical confrontation with Butler who with homicidal intentsteps on Jim's ledge-gripping hands which causes the youngreporter to plummet into space only to be caught by Superman onhis return to the office. Hill and another Officer Reilly (playedby Dennis Moore, once an active serial hero in cliffhangers likesThe Purple Monster Strikes) bring in Butler and Lois getsa chance to give him a dandy of a slap. Lois thanks Jimmy andWhite tells him there might be a raise in it for him.

After being stopped by police a short distance from the scene of the robbery, Wells, who was handcuffed and taken out of his car, told authorities someone had put the bomb on him and forced him to rob the bank. He said the person or persons who put the bomb on him had apparently started some kind of timer on the device and that he did not have much time before it exploded.

Investigators also disclosed that an extensive note Wells was carrying listed four nearby locations. The note instructed Wells to go to those locations to get more information, but investigators would not confirm he was supposed to go to those places so the bomb could be disarmed.

Heibel, however, said there's a chance Wells knew the person or people who put the bomb on him, especially considering that the coroner found no defensive marks on his body. It's possible Wells was sought out for his soft-spoken behavior, Heibel said.

Aviles, a divorced father of three and former stuntman, started his human bomb act more than 20 years ago. With a partner cruising after him in a patrol car, Aviles would tumble off his motorcycle, run into an outhouse and dive into an empty 55-gallon steel barrel.

Human psychology research has found that people are predisposed to do harm to others if ordered to do so by an authority figure. As AI-enabled decision-making tools are introduced into militaries, human operators may begin to view these systems, by virtue of their comparatively greater intelligence, as agents of authority, and thus be more inclined to follow their recommendations, even in the face of information that indicates they would be wiser not to.

This predisposition will likely be influenced, and possibly expedited, by human bias, cognitive weaknesses (notably decision-making heuristics), false assumptions, and the innate anthropomorphic tendencies of human psychology. For example, US Army investigators discovered that automation bias was a factor in the 2003 Patriot missile fratricide incidents, in which operators mistakenly fired upon friendly aircraft early during the Iraq War.

A pitiless new day is dawning. The powers of the inhuman and the efficacy of hatreds mutate dangerously. A generation that worked diligently to tame the threat of nuclear war finds itself driven toward a horizon more frightening to contemplate than the one it dreamed of avoiding. Now it must try again to think the unthinkable, to leave the era of the H-bomb and enter the time of the human bomb.

Great confusion understandably resulted when this certainty disintegrated before our eyes, exploded by human bombs in Manhattan. An annihilating power is available today, or will soon be available, to just about anyone; the destructive will of an enemy without borders, equivalent to Nazi dreams, targets civilians: this combination amounts to a do-it-yourself Hitler kit. How can one make sense of, how can one neutralize, a human bomb?

The history of our last 100 years consists of a number of unexpected ruptures, of which September 11 is the most recent. Revelations so powerful as to rob us of breath have confronted us with the scorched face of a human condition too troubling, too overwhelming, to perceive during ordinary times. Rare but decisive moments of truth have short-circuited current opinions. Respected traditions have yielded to the greater strength of a searing realization. The events broke out like lightning in a calm sky, like the storm before the shipwreck.

Astrophysicists have found, wandering in the starry expanse, certain black holes. When faraway stars come into contact with them, the stars disappear, along with their planets, swallowed by bottomless darkness. From the beginning, human civilizations have existed alongside analogous moral abysses, which foreshadow an end of all things. According to tradition, such annihilation suggests a jealous and vengeful divinity, or malevolent demons.
