Thank you for this episode. My 23 year old son recently started playing and was bummed at Christmas that no one seemed interested. After hearing about Magic on this podcast I gave it a try and now have my very own cards. I have leveled up my NerdMom status!
Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic is a Japanese anime series based on the manga series of the same title written and illustrated by Shinobu Ohtaka. Produced by A-1 Pictures, it began airing in Japan on October 7, 2012.[1] It also debuted in North America on October 10 on Crunchyroll and Hulu.[2] It is licensed by Aniplex of America in North America,[3] by Viz Media Europe in Europe[4] and by Madman Entertainment in Australia.[5] From episodes 1-12, the opening theme song is "V.I.P." by SID and the ending theme song is "Yubi Bōenkyō" by Nogizaka46.[6] From episode 13 onwards, the opening song is "Matataku Hoshi no Shita de" by Porno Graffitti and the ending is "The Bravery" by Supercell.[7][8]
A second season, Magi: The Kingdom of Magic began airing on October 6, 2013. For the first part, the opening theme song is "Anniversary" by SID and the ending theme song is "Eden" by Aqua Timez,[9] while for the second part, the opening theme song is "Hikari" by Vivid and the ending theme song is "With You/With Me" by 9nine.[10]
First aired on The Hub (later renamed Discovery Family), each season comprises 26 episodes, with the exception of season 3, which has 13 episodes. During the course of the series, 222 episodes of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic aired, including two specials over nine seasons, between October 10, 2010, and October 12, 2019.[1] Other media released during and after its run included a feature-length film and 6 clip shows.
My Little Pony Best Gift Ever is a double-length Christmas-themed special that aired in between the eighth and ninth seasons of the series. It was followed by a series of three supplementary animated shorts that were uploaded to YouTube on December 11, 2018 (December 11, 2018).
On February 17, 2018, at the American International Toy Fair, a ninth season was announced by Hasbro.[103] In a TV Kids Guide by Gaumont, it was confirmed that season nine will have 26 episodes.[104] At the following year's Toy Fair in New York, it was confirmed that this will be the final season of the series.[105] It premiered on April 6, 2019. Among highlights include the series' 200th episode as well as the return of "Weird Al" Yankovic and Patton Oswalt as Cheese Sandwich and Quibble Pants, respectively.[106]
My Little Pony: Rainbow Roadtrip is a 60-minute special that aired on Discovery Family during the season nine mid-season hiatus between episodes 13 and 14. It was produced by the Irish animation studio Boulder Media rather than DHX and features the same animation style used in the 2017 movie.
Clip show episodes of the series are being released exclusively through the 9Now video-on-demand service in Australia. These episodes replace the words "Friendship is Magic" in the series logo with "Friendship is Forever" in the opening sequence, and they feature various clips of episodes from seasons one through nine alongside brand new animation. These episodes were written by Josh Haber and directed by Denny Lu and Mike Myhre.
Reality, however, is a different story, and our protagonist YOON AH-YI (Choi Sung-eun) experiences that for herself when she bumps into a classmate while running to class. The impact sends her sprawling onto the stairs, scraping her knee and tearing a hole in her stockings.
I haven't read the webtoon (just a summary) so of course I have no comparison.
In fact, I would have expected Ji Chang-wook to be much creepier in his role, I find him comparatively harmless. Especially after the creepy stories they tell about the magician in school.
So different are the expectations :-)
At first I thought he was going to ask her to be his assistant or something so she could make some money, but he's just stalking her (for no real reason?) and making things/people disappear. I have no idea what's going on. He knows her from somewhere, she doesn't remember, I get that, but that doesn't make less weird the way he's acting.
I think I would feel more comfortable watching the show if they showed his perspective.
The one thing I didn't like about the first number is that it was kind of a classic musical opening number, the way you might see on Broadway. A couple of the other songs reminded me more of the classic K-drama songs--the one ballad sung by Chang Wook was beautiful. But as for the first song, if you have a wealth of kpop dance talent available, why not draw on it. No need to do a take on Broadway.
I mean, we know this story is set up as a clash of personalities between the adult that wants to be a child and the child that wants to be an adult. So this joke/magic trick beautifully served the purpose of introducing exactly that clash. And I don't really think he knows her or that they have met before. To me, so far it looks more like he, as a magician is drawn to people in need of magic in their lives, but I guess we'll see when we watch the next episode. So in his "defence", I'm not sure how much the magician actually knows about her. I don't think this was meant as, he knows about her money struggles and does this on purpose.
I am really looking forward to see this story play out.
I need to watch the other episodes and see. Maybe you're right.
It's just he said something about "you used to believe in magic" that made me believe that.
Probably you're right and he was just talking in general, like she used to have hope or something.
The life story of Ah Yi is heartbreaking and the actress is pretty convincing with her sweet demeanour. Since we are not to discuss beyond the first episode, all I can say is as the stories of the leading casts unfold, everything looks promising and interesting...good acting all round ?
Top hats give me hives, so I was quite apprehensive going in but willing to take a chance for Ji Chan-wook. So far the creepiness level is acceptably low. JCW using the magical equivalent of a wrist-grab to tug Ah-yi along through the theme park was mildly uncomfortable, but at least it avoided having him manhandle a high-school kid. His singing has gotten even better. Having applied my musical-theater filter, I'm cautiously optimistic.
Also, I recognized the road Ah-yi runs up from BTLIOF, among other dramas. Am I the only one who thought for a moment that Nam Se-hee was going to come racing down that road to save her from nasty ahjusshi the way he saved Yoon Ji-ho?
Ah-yi saying to the magician, "You seem like an okay person. Don't you think you should look for a job that's more productive and, like, meaningful?" made me laugh so hard my cat leapt off the couch.
I gave the first episode a watch, and it was okay, although I found myself fast forwarding a LOT. I didn't realize it was a musical till they broke into song and dance at the beginning, after which my already meager interest in the show waned even further.
Ah-yi's character tired me out from the moment I was introduced to her. She has such a hard life that it exhausts me to see. Ji Chang-wook is alright in the role, and so's the rest of the cast, I suppose. However, after having to fast forward through most of episode 1, being unable to care about Ah-yi as a character, and just being underwhelmed by the show in general, I think I'll drop this one and follow the story through recaps/reviews, since I am a little curious about how it unfolds.
I loved the first episode of the Sound of Magic. The acting was on point, Ji Chang-wook comes of as equally childish and creepy with a hefty dose of hot. It's his eyes, he has this very intense look that works really well with the character. I'm intrigued for future episodes.
this really reminds me of why i love Ji Change Wook so much! the actors are slaying their roles and after the first episode i was wishing we could see JCW more!!! 6 episodes is ok for this show but not nearly enough for JCW and my eyes! this makes up for the melty one i think! for me
I dont know the webtoon and I have only watched the first episode so far, so nothing to compare it to. I have definitely gone into this with high expectations and the episode did a great job at setting the scene and introducing the characters. I actually loved JCWs portrayal of the magician. I never feel like I am seeing JCW acting, he just becomes his roles in a complete way that not every actor can do. I liked that the magician wasn't just exuberant and 100% boyish charm. I think one of JCWs strengths as an actor is that his characters never seem one dimensional. You could argue, that one could have held off showing that there is more layers to this character and potentially something darker (who knows) until later episodes and just shown happy, childish, boyish charm. But personally I loved seeing his reactions to Ah-yi's words, how sadness and maybe even hurt flashes across his face for the fraction of a second, hinting at something more. I think JCW is absolutely brilliant at doing this sort of acting.
Very curius to see where this is gonna take us.
I've never been much of a fan of musicals, and The Sound of Magic is certainly a musical. I loved Ji Change Wook in Healer but have cringed at everything he has done since Healer. Despite that, I am loving The Sound of Magic and think Ji Change Wook is the perfect actor for this character. Wonderful. This drama is a fun change of pace.
