WATER SUPPLY FOR FOOD-PRODUCING GARDENS

Please fill out the survey below and forward this email to your garden members or network. The more responses the USDA (US Dept. of Agriculture) receives, the more this project will be taken seriously. The survey does not ask you which community garden you are from, so it might be something you want to add.

If you prefer, you can also print the attached form and mail it to them.  See Wendy’s email below for more details

Cheers,

Magali

hi Magali,

Could you please get it out to all the gardeners? The image on the bottom is optional. Thanks so much! Wendy

Water supply for community gardens - reply to GreenThumb’s survey by 6/25

USDA funding - 263 NYC community gardens that grow food are eligible!

This is not a competitive process - there is ample funding for all eligible gardens - but you do need to get in the game!

Important: Fill the survey by Tuesday, June 25:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JMQY9LT

This is a new Federally-funded project, prioritizing GreenThumb gardens that produce food. There are several steps to the process, including an EIS, so it will likely be two years before construction begins, with all projects to be completed by 2030. The $350,000 to $400,000 cost per garden for connecting to the nearest city water main is fully-funded, and the water, while metered, will be FREE.

This presentation has detailed information:

https://www.nycgovparks.org/greenthumb/water-supply-plan

Located in the garden, the water supply will have a 4x8 footprint with a large concrete Vault and a tap (on the survey, I asked for something more organic, less like a tombstone).

The water will be potable, and you can request add-ons (such as a bottle filler or sink) on the survey, or make other relevant comments: I pointed out that we water the nearby street trees which provide food for the insects and birds that help pollinate the garden.

Gardeners will still have to distribute water around the garden via a hose or irrigation system.

You can visit 6BC Garden, 630 E 6th St, in the East Village to see how the construction looks in process, so you know what to expect, or watch the presentation (in Spanish or English).

Gardens who already have projects in the works, or who've been awarded or are seeking funding for similar (or simpler) projects from local elected officials or other sources of funding, may be able to see their projects realized more quickly. If none of the above have worked out for you, now's your chance!

It's important to have have survey responses now, during the scoping phase of this project, so please get the word out for the June 25, 2024 survey deadline: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JMQY9LT

Thank you from Wendy, a gardener at Siempre Verde
