Greetings Neighbors!
The steering committee of your Lower East Side Food Coop has been meeting every two weeks and we wanted to update you on the progress we’ve made.
GENERAL MEETING & POTLUCK PLANNED FOR TUESDAY, MAY 4TH, 2010
We’ve been working closely with the Educational Alliance, which has generously provided us with meeting space, both for the steering committee meetings and for our upcoming general meeting on May 4th. We’ll be bringing our favorite pot luck dishes to share, and we encourage you to do the same (of course, you’re welcome with or without food). We will also briefly present on some initial findings from the survey (see below) and from research into space, legal, and membership needs.
Please save the date. As soon as we determine the exact time and location of the general meeting, we’ll send out an announcement. We hope to see you there.
WEBSITE AND SURVEY
Our website,
http://lesfoodcoop.org/,
is up and running, and we invite you to visit it often for news about the Food Coop. Most importantly, we need you to complete the LES Food Coop Survey. We can use the data we collect there to attract potential funders, lenders and other supporters. And of course, we can also learn what’s most important to our future owner/members. You’ll also see the survey on flyers posted throughout the neighborhood very soon.
NEW CSA
We’ve included links on our website to information about the new LES CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). They’re having a Meet the Farmers event on Tuesday, March 23rd from 6-7:30 pm at the Educational Alliance, 197 East Broadway. To learn more about what the CSA does and how you can get involved, send an email to
les...@gmail.com. You can also check out the CSA’s partner farm, Monkshood Nursery at

LOOKING AHEAD
It’s a bit early to commit to a brick and mortar location for our Food Coop, but we’re in the process of determining the best size and layout for our store. Michael Tumminia of the Seward Park Board of Directors has promised to keep us posted on available properties; perhaps one of Seward Park’s commercial spaces will turn out to be a good fit for us.
We participated in Seward Park’s Green Day on March 4th as part of our outreach efforts, making a brief presentation and signing up some potential new members. And our outreach is continuing. We are currently compiling a list of area organizations to contact as we expand our membership list. And we need your help! We welcome anyone who wants to get involved during this planning stage – and beyond. We especially need people with skills in the following areas:
Web & IT
Legal
Accounting
Education
Nutrition and food service
Grant writing
Community organizing
Willingness to spread the word
We’ll have more news for you soon, and we’re looking forward to seeing you at our General Meeting on May 4th!
