Yourpassword has been reset. However, you need to rollback your changes with utilman.exe.

Just reboot your server, and repeat this guide. Inside CMD window in Windows Recovery mode, please type:

So I did something really stupid, forgot the admin password to my server running MS Server 2012. I so rarely shut down and have to log in because my server is running 24/7 that when I lost power and had to log back in, I couldn't remember my password. I'm trying to avoid having to reinstall the entire the OS because of a rookie mistake, mostly because of all the services running on this server. I've downloaded quite a few trial "recovery tools" but these seem to do everything except reset a password. If anyone could guarantee that a particular application works and is worth paying for, I'd be happy to pay for something to save myself the days and days of reinstalling and reconfiguring all the different services. So my question is, what is the path of least resistance to getting full access to my server again?

Restart your computer. On the login screen, tap Shift key five times and you'll see a command prompt screen in administrator mode. OK, type net user UserName NewPassword (replace the UserName and UserPassword with the one you need) and press Enter key. The user password will be replaced with new one. Close the window and then you can log in that user with new password.

Some third-party companies claim to be able to circumvent passwords that have been applied to files and features that Microsoft programs use. There are two types of Windows user accounts in Windows Server: domain user accounts and local user accounts. The former are stored on domain controllers. The latter are stored on the computer where the user is logged on. The administrator account we usually refer to refers to the local user account. When a user logs on with a local user account, the computer checks the user list and password files to see if they can log on to the computer.

Microsoft uses different encryption algorithms to protect these two types of Windows Server user account passwords and stores them in different locations. Typically, domain user accounts are stored in the Active Directory database file (ntds.dit), while local user accounts are stored in the Windows SAM registry hive.

When a password is lost, it means we lose control of our computer. If you have another account with administrator permission, you can still log into the operating system. But when you only have one account, and you lose the password, it's a little more troublesome, because Windows always makes it difficult for users to recover their passwords.

Getting locked out of your Windows Server 2008 R2 can be a real headache, especially when you've got critical stuff on the line. But don't worry, there's a pretty handy tool that might just be your knight in shining armor: the Passcue Windows Password Recovery tool. This little gem is designed to help you reset your administrator password without needing to remember the old one or risking loss of data.

Step 1. Download and Install: First things first, you'll need access to another computer where you can download the Passcue Windows Password Recovery tool. After downloading, install it on that second computer.

Step 2. Create a Bootable Disk/USB: The software will allow you to create a bootable CD/DVD or USB drive. This is what you'll use to reset the password on your server. The interface is pretty user-friendly, so just follow the steps in the software to create this.

Step 3. Boot from the Disk/USB: Next, you'll need to plug the bootable USB or insert the CD/DVD into your locked server. Restart the server and boot from the USB/CD/DVD. You might need to change the boot order in the BIOS settings to do this, so keep that in mind.

Step 4. Reset the Password: Once the Passcue tool is up and running, it'll show you a list of all user accounts on your server. From there, you can select the administrator account whose password you want to reset. Follow the prompts to reset the password to a new one (or you can even remove it).

Step 5. Restart and Log In: After resetting the password, reboot your server and this time boot it up normally. You should now be able to log in with the new password you set.

The beauty of using a tool like Passcue is that it's designed to be safe and effective, meaning you shouldn't have to worry about losing any of your files or applications in the process. Plus, it's a pretty straightforward way to solve the problem, especially if you're not super tech-savvy or if other methods haven't worked for you.

Just a heads up, though, always make sure you're using tools like this responsibly and ethically, since being able to reset passwords is powerful stuff. And once you're back in, maybe think about setting up some reminders or a password manager so you don't get locked out again in the future. Good luck!
