With the same thing happening on both printers, I would look for a software conflict in your system files. The best way to do this is to provide the free EtreCheck report by using the Additional Text option when posting. This will will show the files that are installing on startup without any personal information and we may be able to identify files that should not be running.

When I first installed my HP printer using the HP Smart App it did not print in color. The Smart App was needed to connect the printer to the same Wifi network as my computer, but also installed the HP driver. After going to Printer settings and removing that driver, I added the Bonjour/AirPrint driver and have had no trouble since.

I've MacBook Pro M1 2021 with the latest Sonoma 14.3. I also have two printers Epson XP-8700 and HP Smart Tank 7000 with the latest firmware and SW (installed like 7 times). I bought the HP because my Epson continuously lost the connection to my MacBook Pro M1 and failed to print or scan until Mac was rebooted or the printer restarted (off/of). Having bought the HP I have the same issue. It prints and scans fine for a day or max two until it loses connection to Mac (error code: failed to open a connection to the device (-21345) - same with the Epson). Switching off the HP or rebooting the Mac are the only ways to get both, the printing and scanning back (for a day or two). AirPrint on HP IP address works (also in colour) but no scan. I can connect to the HP printer through the HP Smart App but only to print (also the app sort of sucks ... for a lack of better description ...). I've been in touch with the Epson and HP support and Apple support the last, but in vain. No-one in any of these offices have a clue what's going on. I'm only happy they're not designing SW for airplanes ...

My Smart Tank 530 printer is connected to my laptop wirelessly and has been working for over a year and half. With frequent windows updates (Windows 10 - build 21H1 19043.1165). The printer driver has disappeared. I have uninstalled and re-installed HP Smart program several times but same problem in the end. My iPad and phones are able to connect to the printer via HP Smart easily.

I now use a PC (of the lab where I work now) on which I have successfully installed Arch Linux not long ago. I want to connect to the HP printer there, already connected to the Ethernet of the lab. The printer is a "HP Color LaserJet M552".

When I tried to print some document, no printer was found. I ran sudo hp-setup (as advised here: Configure your printer using hp-setup). A dialog box appeared, which asked me for "PPD" file, and I don't know where it is and what it is for.

Meanwhile, I was prompted to choose a PPD file. The default folder for me to choose is /usr/share/ppd/hp, but when I choose anything, the box is still empty, saying I should choose a file. The printer name is shown, so I think connection is fine.

The library hplip from pacman and the driver plug-in installed via hp-setup -i have to have the same version, otherwise you'll be unable to print and see this error message in your systemd journal (inspect it with journalctl -e):

This error persisted when calling sudo hp-setup -i and I'm not sure the printer is supported anymore by HP for Arch Linux.I've since ditched the HP LaserJet P1102 and got a Brother DCP-L3550CDW whose monochrome printing feature worked out of the box on Arch Linux 5.3.12: In system-config-printer, I selected "LPD/LPR queue 'BINARY_P1" as the connection and "PCL Laser" as the driver. I used this driver to enable color printing.

Initially I installed KDE on Arch Linux. After many hours of trying to configure my HP LaserJet professional, I reinstalled Arch Linux with the Xfce desktop. Pacman installed hplip and wget. Check with the ArchWiki to make sure all the dependencies are installed. Update the system frequently. Make sure your printer is visible to your system. I rebooted three or four times. Finally, I was able to print. Final thought. It seems that Arch needed wget to communicate with HP, while "hp-setup" did its job. Final suggestion: Never buy an HP LaserJet professional that needs an hplip-plugin. I'll never do that again. Good luck.
