Since LeoFS is sort of distributed replicated storage, you can configure the number of replicas for files stored in LeoFS so in almost cases, the backup functionality would not needed (because it's already backed up on several machines)
However, there are some niche use cases which need backup functionality for more durability (by copying files to some cloud storage etc.) or cost reduction (by moving files to some cloud backup storage like amazon glacier

That being said, IMO there is room for improvements so we'd welcome any contribution around this area.
