Hello,

I’ve been following LeoFS for several years with much interest, but no immediate need.

But this idea just came to mind as both a learning exercise and useful addition to my home lab:

E.g., building NAS on top of LeoFS.

So, two questions:

1) Is this a feasible idea?
2) Can I configure the system to provide both NAS and backup functionality?

My thought is to build is to build the system in phases:

Phase I

— bring up Ubuntu 16.04 on one NUC
— implement NAS functionality (anything special I need to know?)
— Implement backup functionality (again, any gotchas?)

Phase 2

— scale out with two or more NUCs

Phase 3

— establish remote access (thinking ZeroTier)

Love to correspond with anyone who can help make this happen. Happy to write up the experience and results.

Best wishes,

LRP

Hello,
Thanks for having interest on LeoFS.

I'd like to answer your questions.

As you may know, LeoFS has had NFS v3 I/F as described below link.

so you can use LeoFS as NAS by mounting it with "-t nfs" option from your local PC.
It's already done.

Since LeoFS is sort of distributed replicated storage, you can configure the number of replicas for files stored in LeoFS so in almost cases, the backup functionality would not needed (because it's already backed up on several machines)

However, there are some niche use cases which need backup functionality for more durability (by copying files to some cloud storage etc.) or cost reduction (by moving files to some cloud backup storage like amazon glacier https://aws.amazon.com/glacier/).
That being said, IMO there is room for improvements so we'd welcome any contribution around this area.

Hope you find my answers helpful.

Best,
Kanno.

Many thanks, Kano. I have a bit of network housekeeping to do. But, that done, this will be high priority.

Best wishes,
