The Microsoft Remote Desktop client is used to connect to Azure Virtual Desktop to access your desktops and applications. This article shows you how to connect to Azure Virtual Desktop with the Remote Desktop client for Windows, which will only allow you to subscribe to a feed made available to you by your organization administrators.

A workspace combines all the desktops and applications that have been made available to you by your admin. To be able to see these in the Remote Desktop client, you need to subscribe to the workspace by following these steps:

If you selected Subscribe, sign in with your user account when prompted, for example us...@contoso.com. After a few seconds, your workspaces should show the desktops and applications that have been made available to you by your admin.

I use multiple desktops on Windows, and I am trying to determine which desktop a window resides on. I can retrieve the position of a window using GetWindowRect (from user32.dll), but this doesn't tell me which desktop the window is on (Desktop 1, Desktop 2, etc).

NOTE: By 'desktop' I don't mean 'monitor', this is a different thing, see Multiple desktops in Windows. It is really hard to search for information on 'windows desktops', as Google is convinced I mean 'the desktop', and refuses to consider any alternatives.

Virtual desktops are a window management feature, not a security feature or a performance feature. Furthermore, they are for end users to organize their windows, not for other programs to organize the windows.

Another scenario that the IVirtualDesktopManager interface is intended to cover is that of an application that consists of multiple windows that operate together, like a main window and a bunch of auxiliary windows. The virtual desktop manager already recognizes many types of auxiliary windows and automatically keeps them on the same virtual desktop as the main window. But an application may have an unusual window structure that eludes this automatic detection.

For those cases, you can call IVirtualDesktopManager::GetWindowDesktopId for your main window to get an ID for its current virtual desktop, and then use IVirtualDesktopManager::MoveWindowsToDesktop to move the auxiliary windows to that same virtual desktop.

That being said, there is an an undocumented IVirtualDesktopManagerInternal interface that can perform more actions, such as enumerating virtual desktops, creating/removing virtual desktops, switching between virtual desktops, etc, however you should avoid using that interface unless you absolutely need it.

In the above cases, keyboad does not work on citrix virtual desktop.
However, most external keyboads can be used by pressing the keyboad symbol at the top of the virtual desktop as shown in the attachment.

Keyboard is not usable in the following situations.
Cannot be used for operations within the Citrix virtual desktop (Edge URL input is possible).
It is not usable when both the PC and the extended display are being used.
It cannot be used when the PC is closed (it can be used when the PC is open).
It is not usable when the keyboard is removed from the main unit of PC (e.g. Surface Pro) and only an external keyboard is used.
The keyboard cannot be used regardless of whether it is a USB keyboard, a wireless keyboard, or a Bluetooth keyboard.

I have problem with opening .txt file on windows-10. Notepad++ is default program to open .txt files, but when there is notepad++ application already running in other virtual desktop OS will automatically switch me to that other application instance and open file in other desktop. I want to open new instance of notepad++ in my current desktop. Is there a way to accomplish that?

Some Office apps, notably PowerPoint, have no option to start a new instance. However, running an app as a different user creates a new instance. So one workaround is to create local Windows users for as many virtual desktops as you want to open PowerPoint on concurrently. This scheme is not ideal, because you have to remember which users/instances you already have running before opening a new one. If you have only a few, it may not be too bad.

These shortcuts could be either on the Windows desktop or in a custom toolbar menu. Once PowerPoint is running, you can either open a PPT file from there, or drag in a file from File Explorer. If you are working on a few PPT files for an extended time, you could create a shortcut for each file, specifying which user to run as.

Unfortunately, dragging a PPT file onto one of the desktop shortcuts described above won't work, because runas requires that the full PowerPoint command line be quoted. Shortcuts for opening a PPT file directly need an intermediate script to sort out the quotes. Create a script such as "PowerPoint_User.bat":

If the shortcut is on your Windows desktop, then you can drag a PPT file onto it. If you create the shortcut in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo, then you can click right on a PPT file and open it from the "Send to" menu. In either case, remember that each shortcut will prompt for a password the first time it is run.

So as a workaround, if you want to later open another sheet on Desktop 1, go to the instance on that desktop (open a new one, if closed) and then click on "File -> Open" to open a new sheet in that instance.

One solution that allows you to continue to run Excel in a single instance of the executable (and therefore continue to have the ability to copy and paste between workbooks) is to set Excel to be shown on all desktops.

I've been trying for months now to get my Quest 2 working with my PC but any time I try to launch anything from the Oculus PC app or SteamVR it launches on my monitor instead. Whenever I launch Quest Link or AirLink it's just a black screen. SteamVR detects that the headset is tracking but never can find the controllers for some reason, and it always gives error code 475 or 301. Virtual desktop is the only thing that has fixed this problem, but it's a bad solution as my internet can't handle it and the video quality is stuttering and inconsistent.

The "normal" 5GHz speed is 866Mbps, so your connection is definitely constrained for some reason and if others are using it as well, you are going to struggle. The best solution is to have a dedicated 5GHz (or wifi6) access point in close proximity to the headset with an ethernet connection to the PC. That should give you sufficient bandwidth for both airlink or virtual desktop. If you have virtual desktop and it works, you needn't bother with airlink at all - many people find virtual desktop superior.

Remotely operate a virtual desktop or cluster computer from your personal device to access 100+ software applications for academic and research purposes. Select a computer below to see installed software (varies by OS and computer type) and how to log in. This service is prioritized for use by students and instructors. Staff and departments can request virtual desktops through UIT's VDI service.

The UCLA Library Campus Library Instructional Computing Commons (CLICC) provides two types of virtual desktops. These desktops allow Bruins to access UCLA resources and work in dozens of licensed software suites. Virtual desktops can be used on any computer or tablet. With an internet connection and the UCLA VPN(opens in a new tab), they can also be used anywhere in the world.

Both virtual desktop types offer a full Windows desktop in addition to their respective software(opens in a new tab). To request software be added to the list, contact us via the CLICC Services Portal(opens in a new tab).

Virtual classrooms provide students and instructors in a course with either type of virtual desktop. Instructors may request virtual classrooms for one-time or recurring events. To start the process, please open a Virtual Classroom Request(opens in a new tab) in the CLICC Resources & Services portal.

Check out our suggested steps for troubleshooting a virtual desktop(opens in a new tab). Please contact us via the CLICC Services Portal(opens in a new tab) if you wish to report a recurring issue.

Virtual desktops are available to all students accepted into a program or certificate AND currently enrolled in a class. Virtual desktops will be accessible five days before the class start date and five days after the class end date.

As organizations across the globe continue to rely on remote work, demand for Windows Virtual Desktops has grown exponentially across industries. And further growth is expected, with IDC predicting the total market opportunity for desktop-as-a-service will reach USD2.99 billion by 2021 as customers increasingly seek scalable remote working solutions.

Windows Virtual Desktop presents a unique opportunity for your organization to support customers as they transition to desktop-as-a-service. It serves as a gateway for new customers who have not yet moved to the cloud, and it simplifies the licensing needs for your current customers. This can lead to cost savings that can either be passed on to your customers or funneled to your margins, resulting in growth and upsell opportunities.
